Kanchnar Guggulu Ingredients, Uses, Dose, Side Effects

Kanchnar Guggulu is also known as Kanchanara Guggulu / gulgulu. It is one of the very efficient Ayurvedic herbal medicines. Its reference is found in Bhaishajya Ratnavali, 44th chapter.

Indications

Traditional indications of Kanchanar Guggulu:
Galaganda – Cervical lymphadentis
Apachi – fibroid, cysts
Arbuda – tumor
Granthi – tumor, fibroid
Vrana – ulcers, wounds
Gulma – abdominal tumor, distension
Kushta – skin diseases
Bhagandhara – fistula in ano

Co-drinks

Traditional co-drinks / anupana:
Kashaya – Decoction of Mundi – Sphaeranthus indicus
Decoction of Khadira – Gum acacia – Acacia catechu
Decoction of Abhaya – Harad – Terminalia chebula

Dosage

Two tablets two to three times a day.
Dose for children below 5 years – half to 1 tablet once or twice a day after food.
Dose for children between 5 – 12 years – 1 tablet 2 – 3 times a day after food.
Dose for children between 12 – 18 years – 1-2 tablets 2 – 3 times a day.

How long can it be used?
It is usually prescribed for a period of 1 – 3 months, depending on the disease condition. Dose is gradually decreased after that period.

Uses

Uses of Kanchanar Guggul:
Useful in treating goitre (nodules of the neck), tumours and extra growths, useful in herbal wound healing, skin diseases, sinuses and fistula.
Doctors also prescribe Kanchanar Guggul for – 
Obesity management – due to the presence of Trikatu, Triphala.
Cough, cold, sinusitis, Asthma treatment (due to the presence of pepper, ginger, long pepper)
Adenoma
Obesity, for weight loss
Hypothyroidism
Fistula
Deep vein thrombosis, recurrent blood clots
Swollen lymph nodes
Tonsilitis

Partially useful in fallopian tube. In below conditions, Kanchanara guggulu is partially useful. Other medicines related to particular diseases is required for complete treatment.
In tubercular cyst, its use is limited. It is useful to reduce the size of the cyst to a small extent.
Uterine tumour, Fibroids, Subserous fibroids
Node in vas deferens
Polycystic Ovarian Disease (PCOD), Ovarian cyst
Colloid nodules of thyroid, Polyps
Endometriosis, BPH
Lipoma,
Non cancerous breast lump

Not useful in

Inguinal hernia
Cancer, metastasis. (It is only a very slightly useful. Probably other medicines are required, along with it).
Keloids
Mouth ulcers – Because it contains Trikatu – ginger, black pepper and long pepper, it is hot in nature. Hence, not useful in mouth ulcers.
Skin tags
Retina disease, macular degeneration
Varicocele (minimal benefits)

Traditional dose: 1 Masha – 750 mg-1 gram
Time for intake – morning.

Side effects

In people with a sensitive stomach, this medicine may cause mild gastric irritation and headache.
Very rarely it can cause loose stools. But this issue should go away within 7 – 10 days of its usage.
It can be taken during the lactation period and in children under medical supervision.
Store in a cool dry place. Keep out of reach and sight of children.  

During pregnancy

This is best avoided during pregnancy. It is useful to shrink the cysts, tumours and fibroids. It is cleansing and detoxifying in nature, whereas in pregnancy, nourishment and growth are expected.
However, under select conditions, if your doctor prescribes this, it can be taken for a few weeks time. There is no absolute contra indication for short term usage.

Kanchanara Gulgulu DS is the double strength version of the same medicine. AVN manufactures this product.

Kanchanara – Bauhinia variegata L. – Bark – 240 g
Shunti – Ginger – Zingiber officinale – Rhizome – 48 g
Maricha – Black pepper – Piper nigrum – Fruit – 48 g
Pippali – Long pepper – Piper longum Linn – Fruit – 48 g
Haritaki – Terminalia chebula Retz – Fruit Rind – 24 g
Vibhitaki – Terminalia bellerica – Fruit Rind – 24 g
Amalaki – Emblica officinalis – Fruit – 24 g
Varuna – Crataeva nurvala – Bark – 12 g
Ela – Cardamom – Elettaria cardamomum – Fruit – 3 g
Twak – Cinnamomum zeylanicum – Stem bark – 3 g
Patra – Cinnamomum tamala – Leaves – 3 g
Guggulu – Commiphora mukul (Guggulu Resin) – equal to the amount of above ingredients – 477 grams

Method of Preparation

Ingredients from Kanchanara to Patra are washed, dried and powdered separately. They are weighed separately and then mixed together. Purified guggulu is weighed and mixed with fine powder of other ingredients. It is pounded well till if forms semi solid consistency and then it is rolled int tablets (vati).

Kanchnar guggulu for fibroids:
Kanchanara guggulu alone is not useful to dissolve large fibroids. It is helpful only in small fibroids, that too when used in combination with other medicines such as Varanadi kashaya, Kshara preparations etc.
Uterine fibroids are often associated with heavy bleeding. In that case, medicines to stop bleeding / heavy periods are required along with Kanchanara guggulu, as it does not help to stop bleeding / periods.

Does it obstruct Iron absorption? Can it be taken along with iron supplements?
This product will not interfere with absorption of Iron Supplement. In fact, because Kanchnar Guggulu contains Triphala, it helps in easy iron absorption.

Can Kunchanar guggulu turn the stool pitch black?
It is uncommon for that to happen. A stool examination for blood in stool could be necessary.
