During pregnancy

Can kanchanara Guggulu be taken during pregnancy? Does it affect conception?
 Dr JV Hebbar
When the woman is trying to conceive if there are cysts as in Polycystic Ovarian Disease or in case of hypothyroidism, high cholesterol, obesity etc., Kanchanara Guggulu in fact helps in solving these problems and thus, aids in conceiving.
But once after conception is confirmed, it is best to consult your Ayurveda doctor with regards to continuing taking Kanchanara Gulgulu.
It is best to avoid taking Kanchanara guggulu during pregnancy or if it is unavoidable, then, as per doctor’s advice, take it in the lowest dose possible, for the lowest time possible.
The reason is simple. There are two types of Ayurvedic medicines – nourishing type and cleansing / detoxifying type. Cleansing type of medicine is to be avoided during pregnancy.

On another note, if you are taking any type of Ayurvedic medicine, soon after conception, consult your Ayurvedic doctor with the list of medicines and limit them to bare minimum.
Read related: Ayurvedic Diet And Lifestyle For Pregnant Woman

This is best avoided during pregnancy. It is useful to shrink the cysts, tumours and fibroids. It is cleansing and detoxifying in nature, whereas in pregnancy, nourishment and growth are expected.
However, under select conditions, if your doctor prescribes this, it can be taken for a few weeks time. There is no absolute contra indication for short term usage.

Kanchanara Gulgulu DS is the double strength version of the same medicine. AVN manufactures this product.

Shloka, Sanskrit Verse

Method of Preparation

Ingredients from Kanchanara to Patra are washed, dried and powdered separately. They are weighed separately and then mixed together. Purified guggulu is weighed and mixed with fine powder of other ingredients. It is pounded well till if forms semi solid consistency and then it is rolled int tablets (vati).

Kanchnar guggulu for fibroids:
Kanchanara guggulu alone is not useful to dissolve large fibroids. It is helpful only in small fibroids, that too when used in combination with other medicines such as Varanadi kashaya, Kshara preparations etc.
Uterine fibroids are often associated with heavy bleeding. In that case, medicines to stop bleeding / heavy periods are required along with Kanchanara guggulu, as it does not help to stop bleeding / periods.

Manufacturers

AVN, Alva Pharmacy, Swadeshi Pharmacy, Nagarjuna – Kaanchanaara Gulgulu Gulika

Does it obstruct Iron absorption? Can it be taken along with iron supplements?
This product will not interfere with absorption of Iron Supplement. In fact, because Kanchnar Guggulu contains Triphala, it helps in easy iron absorption.

Can Kunchanar guggulu turn the stool pitch black?
It is uncommon for that to happen. A stool examination for blood in stool could be necessary.

It is used by Ayurvedic practitioners in the treatment of enlarged prostate.
But in case of enlarged liver, the pathology(disease process), infection, etc have to be confirmed before suggestions.

It is used widely in the treatment of enlarged prostate. The percentage wise, it will be difficult to say. Enlarged prostate is usually seen in elders. who require to meet many parameters such as BP control, Diabetes control etc. In such a patient, to keep the enlargement under check, Kanchanara Guggulu is used. If you ask my experience, I would say, 20 % reduction in enlargement can be achieved.

Dear doctor, this medicine is prescribed against uterine fibroids. But at the same time it may have pro-estrogenic effect. Won’t it make things worse then, because fibroids are caused by excessive estrogen?

There is no hard and fast rule like that.
BUT, Kanchakara Guggulu is something which reduces the size of cyst, nodule etc. so, it is not nourishing in nature, hence, to be on the safer side, it is best to avoid in expecting moms.

It is not true. Only in a very weak patient, when higher dose of guggulu is required to be used, then only it can be said that some nourishing agents like milk can be used as adjuvant. Not in all cases. This rule should also be applied very selectively. For example, in Rheumatoid arthritis case, it is best to avoid milk and go ahead with guggulu tablet alone.

Hi, you are already on moderate to high dose of Kanchanara Guggulu. I would continue the same dose for another month and then would have reduced it to 3 tabs per day for next 6 weeks. There are no big side effects with this, other than gastric complaints. But I’d best to avoid during pregnancy. The muscle nodes might not go away completely with this.
