Chinmaya gesture overall increases / balances vata and pitta and pacifies kapha. This mudra balances the prana vayu – sadhaka pitta – udana vayu – tarpaka kapha axis. When the tips of the thumb and fore finger touch to form a circle it is Chin mudra and not Chinmaya mudra.
When, however, the tip of the forefinger touches instead the thumb at the bottom of the first phalange, ie at the
horizontal line dividing the two top phalanges of the thumb, then it is Chinmaya mudra. This is what I learned in a Yoga course held by Yoga Brotherhood at Chennai. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Further to my earlier comment I forgot to add that while the other three fingers are curled in Chinmaya mudra, the same are extended and do not touch the palm in Chinmudra.
    Sorry for the omission.
