Night Jasmine Nyctanthes arbor-tristis Remedies: Anorexia, Fever

Among the herbal drugs few are important from history and philosopimportance with respect to history and philosophy also. Night Jasmine is one such plant which is believed to be favorable to Lord Krishna. 

According to Ayurveda it is a drug of choice in cystic swellings, painful conditions of the joints and chronic fevers and recurrent/intermittent fevers.

Botanical name – Nyctanthes arbor-tristis
Oleaceae family.
English name – Night Jasmine.

The flowers are offered to the Gods and seeds, leaves and bark are used for treatment.
The plants are found in most parts of India.

It is bitter in taste, hot in potency and undergoes pungent bio transformation.
It is Kaphavatahara and Pitta shodhaka in action.

Home remedies

Night jasmine home remedies:

Intestinal worms

Seed powder in intestinal worms and colon irritations:
The dried seeds are taken and fine powder is made. 1-2 gram of this powder is administered along with warm water or decoction of cumin seeds. This is effective in gurgling of stomach, intestinal worms, colon irritation, IBS etc.

Cough, throat irritation

Leaf or bark powder for cough and throat irritation:
Dried leaves or bark of night Jasmine are made into fine powder. This is administered in a dose of 1-2 grams by mixing with 1 – 2 teaspoon of honey. This cures cough, cold and throat irritation.

Liver disorders, loss of appetite

Fresh leaf juice for liver disorders and loss of appetite:
Fresh leaf juice – 5 ml is is administered along with 1 gram of black pepper or long pepper powder. This is found to be effective in the conditions like liver disorders, high viscosity of bile, and loss of appetite.

Dysuria, chronic fever

Leaf decoction with honey for dysuria and chronic fevers and PUO:
The fresh leaf decoction is added with little honey and taken in the morning, preferably before food. It cures the complaints like dysuria,  chronic fevers and PUO.
General method of preparation of decoction (kashaya) – 1 tablespoon of powder is added with 2 cups of water, boiled and reduced to 1 cup, filtered.

Joint disorders

Bark decoction in joint disorders:

The stem bark(or roots) are made into decoction and administered in the dose of 30 ml twice daily for the adults. This cures joint pain, subluxation of the knee joint(janu shaithilya), ligamental taer etc.

A flower yielding plant may be a nectorous medicament. A plant which decoraters the garden has the potency to cure the underlying illhelath conditions of the individuals also. Night jasmine , well known as Parijataka in ayurvedic texts is a classical example in this regard.
