Introduction
Suranjan bulbs act as laxative and emetic in larger dosage. Otherwise it is a potent diuretic, anti inflammatory, aphrodisiac, expectorant and anti arthritic in action.
Suranjan is a rare herb used in Ayurveda, Siddha, Unani and Homeopathy system of medicines. Its botanical name is Colchicum luteum Baker and it belongs to Liliaceae family.It is called Colchicicum in English.
The plant is available in three important varieties namely, white, yellow and black. White variety is used abundantly in Ayurvedic medicinal purpose.
The white variety is common in Iran and yellow variety is found more in Afghanistan. Black variety is found in Punjab state. The black variety mentioned is poisonous and should be used cautiously. Usually it is used for external medication only. Black variety constitutes the chemical principles like colchicine, demecolcine and colchicoside.
The bulb like corn of the plant is used for medicinal purpose. The plant is known for its rich constituent of well appreciated analgesic colchicines.
Suranjan balances Kapha and Vata Dosha. It possesses Ushna veerya (hot in potency) And Katu vipaka (pungent bio-transformation).

Home remedies
Few of the important simple remedies are –
Chronic wounds
1. Suranjan powder dusting over chronic wounds:
Suranjana bulbs/corns are taken and fine powder is made. This is dusted over the chronic wounds with oozing. This helps to heal wounds quicker.
Arthritis
2. Suranjana (white) decoction for arthritis:
White variety of Suranjana is taken and made into decoction. Small amount of dry ginger and cumin seeds may also be added. 20-30 ml decoction is administered twice daily; while taking small amount of ghee can also be added. This pacifies arthritis effectively.
General method of decoction preparation is –
1 tablespoon (10 grams) of coarse powder of the herb is added with 2 cups of water. Boiled in open air till the total content is reduced to 1 cup. This is filtered and used.
Sexual debility
3. Suranan for sexual power:
Equal quantity of Suranjan, saffron and sugar candy are taken and fine powder is made. This is mixed well and stored in air tight containers. 1-2 gram of this recipe is administered along with ghee once daily preferably during night time. This improves sex power, useful in premature ejaculation and fatigue.
Urinary disorders
4. Cold infusion for urinary disorders:
10 gram of coarse powder of Suranjana is taken and added to 100 ml of cold water and kept for 1-2 hour. Then it is macerated and taken on filtration. This pacifies dysuria, burning during urination, recurrent episodes of UTI etc.
Sciatica, neuralgia
5. Hot infusion for sciatica pain and neuralgia:
20-40 ml of hot infusion of Suranjana is found to be effective to reduce the radiating pain caused in any of the neuralgia cases especially brachial neuralgia and sciatica conditions.
Rhinitis, tonsillitis
6. Fine paste with honey for rhinitis, cold, sore throat and tonsillitis:
Bulbs like corns of Suranjan is taken and rubbed well against a stone to obtain fine paste. This is licked by mixing with honey. This can be repeated 4-6 timers in day. It is effective in cold, rhinitis, asthma, sore throat, tonsillitis, allergic rhinitis etc.
Suranjana is the drug which is appreciated worldwide for its known anti inflammatory and anti arthritic properties. Majune surinjan, Suranjan ennai and Suranjana choorna are the few important traditional preparations of this drug.
