Introduction
Clerodendron serratum Spreng is a well known plant used in the treatment of cold, cough, asthma, eosinophilia, sore throat, tonsillitis etc. This plant belongs to Verbenaceae family.
It is called Bharangi in Sanskrit. The leaves, roots and stems of the plant are used in therapeutics.
The drug is appreciated as a potent drug of hot potency and Katu (pungent) kind of bio- transformation (vipaka). So it acts as Kaphavata shamaka.

Home remedies
Some of the simple and effective remedies of Bharngi are as follows-
Erysipelas
1. Bharngi leaf juice application over erysipelas:
Fresh leaves are pounded well to obtain fresh juice. Filtered. This is applied over the lesions of erysipelas. This can be repeated 4-5 times a day. Feather of the parrot or pigeon can be used to apply the juice so as to minimise the pain during application.
Cold, cough
2. Root powder decoction in cold, cough and breathlessness:
Bharngi root fine powder (2-3 gram) or decoction (20-30 ml) is administered in the conditions of cold, cough and breathlessness. It contributes significant health benefits.
General method of decoction preparation is –
1 tablespoon (10 grams) fo coarse powder of the herb is added with 2 cups of water. Boiled in open air till the total content is reduced to 1 cup. This is filtered and used.
Amenorrhea
3. Bharngi and sesame seed decoction in amenorrhoea:
Root or bark powder of Bharngi is mixed with equal amount of black sesame seed and decoction is prepared. To this little jaggery may be added. This is very effective in the cases like amenorrhoea.
Chronic cough, asthma
4. Bharngi and Liquorice powder with honey in chronic cough and asthma:
Fine powder of the above two herbs is administered by mixing with honey(licking), in a dose of 3 – 5 grams, once or twice a day, after food. This pacifies the cold, cough and asthma.
Hoarseness of voice
5. Bharngi with ginger juice and honey in hoarseness of voice:
Fine powder of Bharngi is mixed with ginger juice and honey and administered for licking in a dose of 3 – 5 grams, 4 – 5 times a day, after food.
It pacifies the hoarseness of the voice caused due to cold, continuous talk, singing etc.
Bharngi guda, Bharngyadi kashaya, Vasabharangyadi kwatha, Bharngi choorna are the important formulations derived from the drug Bharngi.
Its proper utilization will help to avoid as well as to cure many diseases related to upper respiratory tract. In addition, Bharngi is also well known as Nirvishi among the folk healers. They use it in cases like food poisoning and in the ill health caused due to food incompatibilities.
A simple herb has multiple health benefits and can be administered in multiple dosage forms such as lehya, decoction, churna etc.

Sir,
Is this called as Parangi pattai churnam in tamil.My Siddha doctor gave me this for Skin rashes.Is that right medication for skin rashes.I also have Asthma.
