Ashtanga Hridayam Chikitsa sthanam Chapter 3:  Kasa Chikitsitam Adhyaya (Treatment of cough)     

The 3rd chapter of Chikitsa sthanam of Ashtanga Hridayam is named as Kasacikitsitam Adhyayah. This chapter deals with the explanation of ‘treatment of cough’.

Vataja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to vata

केवलानिलजं कासं स्नेहैरादावुपाचरेत् ।
वातघ्नसिद्धैः स्निग्धैश्च पेयायूषरसादिभिः ॥ १ ॥
लेहैर्धूमैस्तथाभ्यङ्गस्वेदसेकावगाहनैः ।
बस्तिभिर्बद्धविड्वातं सपित्तं तूर्ध्वभक्तिकैः ॥ २ ॥
घृतैः क्षीरैश्च सकफं जयेत् स्नेहविरेचनैः ।
Cough arising from Vata alone, should be treated first with fats (medicated oil or ghee) prepared from herbs which are anti-vata and unctuous, with the drinking of thin gruel, soup and meat soup etc; with confections, inhalations, oil massage, sudation, pouring of warm decoction over the body, immersing the body in medicated liquids and enema therapy when there is obstruction to feaces and flatus, when vata is associated with Pitta (it should be treated) by administration of Medicated ghee and milk after the ingestion of food, and when associated with Kapha it should be won over by the administration of fatty purgatives.

गुडूचीकण्टकारीभ्यां पृथक् त्रिंशत्पलाद्रसे ॥ ३ ॥
प्रस्थः सिद्धो घृताद्वातकासनुद्वह्निदीपनः ।
Medicated ghee prepared from thirty pala (1.44 kg) of decoction of Tinospora cordifolia and Solanum xanthocarpum and one prastha – 768 g of Ghrta (ghee) cures cough produced by Vata and kindles digestion power.

क्षाररास्नावचाहिङ्गुपाठायष्ट्याह्वधान्यकैः ॥ ४ ॥
द्विशाणैः सर्पिषः प्रस्थं पञ्चकोलयुतैः पचेत् ।
दशमूलस्य निर्यूहे पीतो मण्डानुपायिना ॥ ५ ॥
स कासश्वासहृत्पार्श्वग्रहणीरोगगुल्मनुत् ।
Medicated ghee is prepared from two sana of each of alkali of Hordeum vulgare Pluchea lanceolata, Acorus calamus, Ferula narthex, Cissampelos pareira, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Coriandrum sativum and Pancakola (Piper longum, roots of Piper longum, Piper retrofractum, Plumbago zeylanica and Zingiber officinale) (made into paste), one Prastha (768 g) of ghee and decoction of dasamula (ten roots). This recipe consumed in suitable dose followed by Manda (thin gruel) as anupana (after drink or vehicle) cures cough, Dyspnoea, Pain in the region of the heart, diseases of the duodenum and abdominal tumors.

द्रोणेऽपां साधयेद्रास्नादशमूलशतावरीः ॥ ६ ॥
पलोन्मिता द्विकुडवं कुलत्थं बदरं यवं ।
तुलार्धं चाजमांसस्य तेन साध्यं घृताढकम् ॥ ७ ॥
समक्षीरं पलांशैश्च जीवनीयैः समीक्ष्य तत् ।
प्रयुक्तं वातरोगेषु पाननावनबस्तिभिः ॥ ८ ॥
पञ्चकासाञ्छिरःकम्पं योनिवङ्क्षणवेदनाम् ।
सर्वाङ्गैकाङ्गरोगांश्च सप्लीहोर्ध्वानिलाञ्जयेत् ॥ ९ ॥
Medicated ghee is prepared from-one drona (12.288 liters) of water, one pala each of (48 g) Pluchea lanceolata, ten roots, Asparagus racemosus, two Kudava each of (384 g) Dolichos biflorus, Ziziphus mauritiana and Hordeum vulgare. Half Tula of Goat’s meat (2.4 kg) and one Adhaka of ghee – 3.072 kg equal quantity of cow’s milk and one Pala (48 g) each of herbs of Jivaniya Gana. (Vide chapter 15 of Sutrasthana). This recipe is used to cure Vatarogas in the form of oral consumption, nasal instillation and enema, cures the five kinds of cough, tremors of the head, pain in the vaginal tract and groins, tetanus, paraplegia, disease of the spleen and Urdhva vata (upward movement of Vata).

विदार्यादिगणक्वाथकल्कसिद्धं च कासजित् ।
Medicated ghee prepared with herbs of vidaryadigana (chapter 15 of sutrasthana) made into decoction and paste cures cough.

अशोकबीजक्षवकजन्तुघ्नाञ्जनपद्मकैः ॥ १० ॥
सविडैश्च घृतं सिद्धं तच्चूर्णं वा घृतप्लुतम् ।
लिह्यात्पयश्चानुपिबेदाजं कासातिपीडितः ॥ ११ ॥
The person who is being troubled with severe cough should consume medicated ghee prepared from seeds of Saraca asoka, Centipeda minima, Embelia ribes, Berberis aristata, Prunus cerasoides and Bida (Lavana) or lick the powder of the above herbs along with ghee followed by drinking of goat milk.

विडङ्गं नागरं रास्ना पिप्पली हिङ्गु सैन्धवम् ।
भार्गी क्षारश्च तच्चूर्णं पिबेद्वा घृतमात्रया ॥ १२ ॥
सकफेऽनिलजे कासे श्वासहिध्माहताग्निषु ।
Embelia ribes, Zingiber officinale, Pluchea lanceolata, Piper longum, Ferula narthex, rock salt, Clerodendrum serratum, alkali of Hordeum vulgare – the powder of these herbs should be consumed in the dose prescribed for drinking ghee (in oleation therapy) in cough caused by vata associated with Kapha, in dyspnoea, hiccup and loss of digestion strength.

दुरालभां शृङ्गवेरं शठीं द्राक्षां सितोपलाम् ॥ १३ ॥
लिह्यात् कर्कटशृङ्गीं च कासे तैलेन वातजे ।
Powder of duralabha (Fagonia cretica), Zingiber officinale, Curcuma zedoaria, Vitis vinifera, sugar candy, Pistacia chinensis should be licked mixed with oil (of sesame) in coughborn from vata.

दुःस्पर्शां पिप्पलीं मुस्तां भार्गीं कर्कटकीं शठीम् ॥ १४ ॥
पुराणगुडतैलाभ्यां चूर्णितान्यवलेहयेत् ।
तद्वत् सकृष्णां शुण्ठीं च सभार्गीं तद्वदेव च ॥ १५ ॥
Leha (confection) prepared from the powders of Alhagi camelorum, Piper longum, Cyperus rotundus, Clerodendrum serratum, Pistacia chinensis, Curcuma zedoaria with old jaggery/molasses and sesame oil cures cough of Vata origin. Similarly similar is the action of powder prepared from Piper longum, Zingiber officinale, Clerodendrum serratum.

पिबेच्च कृष्णां कोष्णेन सलिलेन ससैन्धवाम् ।
मस्तुना ससितां शुण्ठीं दध्ना वा कणरेणुकाम् ॥ १६ ॥
पिबेद्बदरमज्ज्ञो वा मदिरादधिमस्तुभिः ।
अथवा पिप्पलीकल्कं घृतभृष्टं ससैन्धवम् ॥ १७ ॥
Powder of Piper longum along with rock salt should be consumed along with lukewarm water Zingiber officinale and sugar consumed with whey, kaṇa or powder of Kana (Piper longum) and Renuka (Vitex agnus) should be consumed with curd or pulp of badara (Ziziphus mauritiana) fruit along with fermented beverages or whey from curds should be used as a drink or paste of Piper longum fried in ghee mixed with rock salt should be used to cure Kasa.

कासी सपीनसो धूमं स्नैहिकं विधिना पिबेत् ।
हिध्माश्वासोक्तधूमांश्च क्षीरमांसरसाशनः ॥ १८ ॥
ग्राम्यानूपौदकैः शालियवगोधूमषष्टिकान् ।
रसैर्माषात्मगुप्तानां यूषैर्वा भोजयेद्धितान् ॥ १९ ॥
The patient of cough associated with Pinasa (chronic nasal Catarrh) should inhale snaihika (lubricating) smoke. He should inhale other herbal smokes mentioned in the treatment of hiccup and dyspnoea (vide, next chapter) in the prescribed manner. The patient should eat food along with milk and meat soup, rice, barley, wheat, rice harvested in 60 days along with the soup of meat of domestic animals, animals living in marshy land and aquatic animals, or with Yusa (soup) of Masa (Vigna mungo) or Atmagupta (Mucuna pruriens) are to be used as food.

यवानीपिप्पलीबिल्वमध्यनागरचित्रकैः ।
रास्नाजाजीपृथक्पर्णीपलाशशठिपौष्करैः ॥ २० ॥
सिद्धां स्निग्धाम्ललवणां पेयामनिलजे पिबेत् ।
कटीहृत्पार्श्वकोष्ठार्तिश्वासहिध्माप्रणाशनीम् ॥ २१ ॥
Peya (thin gruel) prepared with Trachyspermum ammi, Piper longum marrow of Aegle marmelos, Zingiber officinale, Plumbago zeylanica, Rasna (Pluchea lanceolata), Cuminum cyminum, Desmodium gangeticum, Butea monosperma, Curcuma zedoaria and Inula racemosa Processed with fats, sours and salt, should be consumed in cough arising from Vata. It cures (kills) pain of the waist, heart and the alimentary tract, dyspnoea and hiccup.

दशमूलरसे तद्वत् पञ्चकोलगुडान्विताम् ।
पिबेत् पेयां समतिलां क्षैरेयीं वा ससैन्धवाम् ॥ २२ ॥
मात्स्यकौक्कुटवाराहैर्मांसैर्वा साज्यसैन्धवाम् ।
Thin gruel prepared from decoction of Dashamula – group of 10 roots, similarly, thin gruel prepared with Panchakola – 5 spices, added with Guda (Jaggery) may be consumed with Ksaireyi (gruel prepared from milk) with equal quantity of Sesamum indicum and rock salt. Peya prepared from fish, fowl, or meat of boar, or mixed with ghee and saindhava can also be administered.

वास्तुको वायसीशाकं कासघ्नः सुनिषण्णकः ॥ २३ ॥
कण्टकार्याः फलं पत्रं बालं शुष्कं च मूलकम् ।
स्नेहास्तैलादयो भक्ष्याः क्षीरेक्षुरसगौडिकाः ॥ २४ ॥
दधिमस्त्वारनालाम्लफलाम्बुमदिराः पिबेत् ।
Chenopodium album, Solanum nigrum, Cassia occidentalis, Blepharis edulis, Fruits and leaves of Solanum xanthocarpum, Raphanus sativus – tender as well as dried, fats, oil and other eatables, prepared from milk, Saccharum officnarum juice and jaggery, whey of Curds, fermented liquid prepared from grains, syrup prepared from sour fruits and fermented beverages should be consumed.

Pittaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to pitta

पित्तकासे तु सकफे वमनं सर्पिषा हितम् ॥ २५ ॥
तथा मदनकाश्मर्यमधुकक्वथितैर्जलैः ।
फलयष्ट्याह्वकल्कैर्वा विदारीक्षुरसाप्लुतैः ॥ २६ ॥
पित्तकासे तनुकफे त्रिवृतां मधुरैर्युताम् ।
युञ्ज्याद्विरेकाय युतां घनश्लेष्मणि तिक्तकैः ॥ २७ ॥
In Pittakasa associated with aggravated kapha, emesis therapy using ghee is beneficial. Emesis can be induced by mixing ghee with decoction of Randia dumetorum, Gmelina arborea, Glycyrrhiza glabra or ghee mixed with the paste of Randia dumetorum and Glycyrrhiza glabra mixed with Pueraria tuberosa and juice of Saccharum officinarum. In Pittakasa associated with thin Kapha, Operculina turpethum should be used for producing purgation along with herbs of sweet taste; When Kapha is thick, associated with Pitta, ghee along with herbs should be used for Vamana.

Note: Sarvanga Sundari commentary on this verse mentions that, in case of Pittaja Kasa associated with Kapha, Vamana with ghee alone should not be done. Hence, it is advised to mix decoction, paste etc.

Pittaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to pitta

हृतदोषो हिमं स्वादु स्निग्धं संसर्जनं भजेत् ।
घने कफे तु शिशिरं रूक्षं तिक्तोपसंहितम् ॥ २८ ॥
After the dosha is expelled out foods which are cold, sweet and unctuous should be consumed as samsarjana (diet regimen from thin to thick food, after purifactory therapy); when there is solid Kapha, the Samsarjana food should be cold, dry and mixed with herbs of bitter taste.

Pittaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to pitta

लेहः पैत्ते सिताधात्रीक्षौद्रद्राक्षाहिमोत्पलैः ।
सघृतः सानिले हितः सकफे साब्दमरिचः ॥ २९ ॥
मृद्वीकार्धशतं त्रिंशत् पिप्पलीः शर्करापलम् ।
लेहयेन्मधुना गोर्वा क्षीरपस्य शकृद्रसम् ॥ ३० ॥
त्वगेलाव्योषमृद्वीकापिप्पलीमूलपौष्करैः ।
लाजमुस्ताशठीरास्नाधात्रीफलविभीतकैः ॥ ३१ ॥
शर्कराक्षौद्रसर्पिर्भिर्लेहो हृद्रोगकासहा ।
In Pittakasa, Leha (confection) should be prepared with with Sita (sugar), Dhatri (Emblica officinalis), Ksaudra (honey), Vitis vinifera, Coriandrum sativum and Nymphaea stellata; ghee is useful when Pitta is associated with vata, if Pitta is associated with Kapha mixed with Cyperus rotundus and Piper nigrum, Vitis vinifera – 50 number, Piper longum fruits – 30 and one pala – 48 g of sugar made into a confection should be consumed mixed with honey, juice of fresh cow dung of calf drinking only milk, should be licked with honey. Leha (confection) prepared from Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Elettaria cardamomum Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale, Vitis vinifera, root of Piper longum, Inula racemosa, Parched grains, Cyperus rotundus, Curcuma zedoaria, Pluchea lanceolata, fruit of Emblica officinalis and Terminalia bellirica along with sugar, honey and ghee; cures heart diseases and cough.

Pittaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to pitta

मधुरैर्जाङ्गलरसैर्यवश्यामाककोद्रवाः ॥ ३२ ॥
मुद्गादियूषैः शाकैश्च तिक्तकैर्मात्रया हिताः ।
घनश्लेष्मणि लेहाश्च तिक्तका मधुसंयुताः ॥ ३३ ॥
शालयः स्युस्तनुकफे षष्टिकाश्च रसादिभिः ।
शर्कराम्भोऽनुपानार्थं द्राक्षेक्षुस्वरसाः पयः ॥ ३४ ॥
Hordeum vulgare, Echinochloa esculenta, Paspalum scrobiculatum may be consumed along with sweet soup of meat of desert-like regions with soup of mudga (Vigna radiata) etc; with vegetables of bitter taste, consumed in moderate quantity is suitable. When the shleshma is solid, confections prepared with bitter herbs, mixed with honey should be administered. When Kapha is thin, Oryza sativa and Sastika rice along with meat soup are ideal as food, Sugar water, juice of Draksa (Vitis vinifera) and Iksu (Saccharum officinarum) and milk are suitable as Anupana (after-drink) along with the above-mentioned foods.

Pittaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to pitta

काकोलीबृहतीमेदाद्वयैः सवृषनागरैः ।
पित्तकासे रसक्षीरपेयायूषान्प्रकल्पयेत् ॥ ३५ ॥
In Pittakasa, fresh juice, milk, thin gruel and soup prepared from Lilium polyphyllum, Solanum indicum, Polygonatum verticillatum and Polygonatum cirrifolium, Adhatoda vasica and Zingiber officinale should be administered.

Pittaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to pitta

द्राक्षां कणां पञ्चमूलं तृणाख्यं च पचेज्जले ।
तेन क्षीरं शृतं शीतं पिबेत्समधुशर्करम् ॥ ३६ ॥
साधितां तेन पेयां वा सुशीतां मधुनान्विताम् ।
Draksha (Vitis vinifera), kana (Piper longum), 5 types of grasses should be boiled in water, this water is mixed with milk and boiled and then cooled; should be consumed mixed with honey and sugar; or from the decoction of these herbs, Peya (thin gruel) is prepared and used cold along with honey.

Pittaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to pitta

शठीह्रीवेरबृहतीशर्कराविश्वभेषजम् ॥ ३७ ॥
पिष्ट्वा रसं पिबेत्पूतं वस्त्रेण घृतमूर्छितम् ।
मेदां विदारीं काकोलीं स्वयङ्गुप्ताफलं बलाम् ॥ ३८ ॥
शर्करां जीवकं मुद्गमाषपर्ण्यौ दुरालभाम् ।
कल्कीकृत्य पचेत्सर्पिः क्षीरेणाष्टगुणेन तत् ॥ ३९ ॥
पानभोजनलेहेषु प्रयुक्तं पित्तकासजित् ।
लिह्याद्वा चूर्णमेतेषां कषायमथवा पिबेत् ॥ ४० ॥
Curcuma zedoaria, Pavonia odorata, Solanum indicum, Sugar and Zingiber officinale are macerated well with water and filtered through cloth. The resultant juice is consumed after processing with ghee. Meda (Polygonatum verticillatum), vidari (Pueraria tuberosa), Kakoli (Lilium polyphyllum), fruits of svayamguta (Mucuna pruriens), Fritillaria roylei, fruit of Mucuna pruriens, Bala (Sida cordifolia), sharkara (sugar), Malaxis acuminata, Vigna trilobata, Teramnus labialis, Fagonia cretica are made into a paste and medicated ghee is cooked along with eight parts of milk. This should be used for drinking, admixture to food and confections; it cures cough arising from pitta; the powder of these may be licked or decoction of the above herbs may be consumed.

Kaphaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to kapha

कफकासी पिबेदादौ सुरकाष्ठात् प्रदीपितात् ।
स्नेहं परिस्रुतं व्योषयवक्षारावचूर्णितम् ॥ ४१ ॥
स्निग्धं विरेचयेदूर्ध्वमधो मूर्ध्नि च युक्तितः ।
तीक्ष्णैर्विरेकैर्बलिनं संसर्गीं चास्य योजयेत् ॥ ४२ ॥
यवमुद्गकुलत्थान्नैरुष्णरूक्षैः कटूत्कटैः ।
कासमर्दकवार्ताकव्याघ्रीक्षारकणान्वितैः ॥ ४३ ॥
धान्वबैलरसैः स्नेहैस्तिलसर्षपनिम्बजैः ।
The patient of cough produced by Kapha should, in the beginning, consume oil exuding out from a piece of wood of Devadaru set on fire, mixed with powder of Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale and Yavakshara (alkali of Hordeum vulgare). After administering oleation therapy, purifactory therapies upper and lower (emesis and purgation) and of the head should be administered, judiciously using strong purgative herbs for persons who are strong. Graduated diet protocol from thin to thick foods should be administered. For the regimen of diet, diet prepared from Yava (Hordeum vulgare), Vigna radiata, Dolichos biflorus, hot and dry foods with predominance of Pungent taste should be used. Cassia occidentalis, Solanum indicum, Solanum xanthocarpum mixed with alkali of Hordeum vulgare and Piper longum – are to be used as vegetables; soup of meat of animals of desert-lands and those living in burrows, processed with oils of either of Sesamum indicum, Brassica nigra, Azadirachta indica may be used.

Kaphaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to kapha

दशमूलाम्बु घर्माम्बु मद्यं मध्वम्बु वा पिबेत् ॥ ४४ ॥
मूलैः पौष्करशम्याकपटोलैः संस्थितं निशाम् ।
पिबेद्वारि सहक्षौद्रं कालेष्वन्नस्य वा त्रिषु ॥ ४५ ॥
Water processed with herbs of dasamula, warm water, wine or honey water mixed with powder of Inula racemosa, Cassia fistula and Trichosanthes dioica kept overnight should be consumed. Honey water should be consumed as an after-drink or at the time of three meals.

Kaphaja Kasa Chikitsa: Treatment of cough due to kapha

पिप्पली पिप्पलीमूलं शृङ्गवेरं विभीतकम् ।
शिखिकुक्कुटपिच्छानां मषी क्षारो यवोद्भवः ॥ ४६ ॥
विशाला पिप्पलीमूलं त्रिवृता च मधुद्रवाः ।
कफकासहरा लेहास्त्रयः श्लोकार्धयोजिताः ॥ ४७ ॥
Confection prepared from the powder of the herbs mentioned in the following three half- verses, consumed with honey iscures cough of kapha origin Piper longum, root of Piper longum, Zingiber officinale and Terminalia bellirica, ash of feather of peacock and fowl and alkali of Hordeum vulgare, Citrullus colocynthis, root of Piper longum and Operculina turpethum.

मधुना मरिचं लिह्यान्मधुनैव च जोङ्गकम् ।
पृथग्रसांश्च मधुना व्याघ्रीवार्ताकभृङ्गजान् ॥ ४८ ॥
कासघ्नस्याश्वशकृतः सुरसस्यासितस्य च ।

3. parched grains, sugar candy, ghee, Pistacia integerrima

धात्रीफल उद्भवा – dhātrīphala udbhavā – and fruit of Emblica officinalis mixed with honey and sesame oil cure cough born of kapha followed by Vata.

रोचनं दीपनं स्वर्यं पीनसश्वासकासजित् ।
Two pala of dadima (Punica granatum), eight pala of Guda (jaggery), three Pala of Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale (made nice powder and licked with honey), improves taste, kindles digestive fire, improves the voice and cures nasal catarrah, dyspnoea and cough.

The digestive Pathyadi decoction described in Jwara chapter, mixed with Srngi (Pistacia chinensis) should be consumed or Cuminum cyminum, Operculina turpethum, Citrullus colocynthis, Cyperus rotundus, Inula racemosa and Piper longum boiled either in cow’s urine or water may be consumed by the patient of Kaphaja Kasa.

From one adhaka of decoction of 10 roots – 3.072 liters, Medicated ghee – 768 ghee is taken and cooked, along with paste prepared with 12 grams of each Inula racemosa, Curcuma zedoaria, Aegle marmelos, Ocimum sanctum, Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale and Ferula narthex consumed along with Peya (thin gruel) as a vehicle cures all diseases arising from aggravated Vata and selsman (kapha) together.

One Adhaka – 3.072 liters of Decoction of root, fruits and leaves of Solanum xanthocarpum is cooked with 768 g of ghee is cooked along with the paste of equal quantity of Sida cordifolia, Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale, Embelia ribes, Curcuma zedoaria, Punica granatum, Black salt, alkali of Hordeum vulgare, Emblica officinalis, Inula racemosa, Boerhavia diffusa, Solanum indicum, Terminalia chebula, Trachyspermum ammi, Plumbago zeylanica, Habeneria indermidia, Vitis vinifera, Piper retrofractum, Boerhavia diffusa, Fagonia cretica, Garcinia pedunculata, Pistacia chinensis, Phylanthus niruri, Clerodendrum serratum, Pluchea lanceolata and Tribulus terrestris – are cooked and mentioned ghee prepared). It is beneficial in all types of cough, dysponea and hiccup.This herbal ghee is called Kantakari Ghritam cures Kapha disorders.

Vyaghri Leha

पचेद्व्याघ्रीतुलां क्षुण्णां वहेऽपामाढकस्थिते ॥ ६३ ॥
क्षिपेत् पूते तु सञ्चूर्ण्य व्योषरास्नामृताग्निकान् ।

सर्पिषः षोडशपलं चत्वारिंशत्पलानि च ।
मत्स्यण्डिकायाः शुद्धायाः पुनश्च तदधिश्रयेत् ॥ ६५ ॥
दर्वीलेपिनि शीते च पृथग्द्विकुडवं क्षिपेत् ।
पिप्पलीनां तवक्षीर्या माक्षिकस्यानवस्य च ॥ ६६ ॥
लेहोऽयं गुल्महृद्रोगदुर्नामश्वासकासजित् ।
4.8 kg of Solanum xanthocarpum, pounded and cooked with water and decoction reduced to one 3.072 liters, decoction is filtered. It is added with the powders of 24 g of each of Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale, Pluchea lanceolata, Tinospora cordifolia, Plumbago zeylanica, Pistacia chinensis, Clerodendrum serratum, Cyperus rotundus roots of Piper longum and Alhagi camelorum sixteen Pala of sarpis (ghee) – 768 g and twenty-four Pala of – 1.152 g, purified sugar candy are added and confection prepared by heating till the mass starts sticking to the ladle. After it gets cooled, two Kudava (192 g) of each of powder Piper longum, Curcuma angustifolia and old maksika (honey) are added. This confection cures abdominal tumors, heart disease, chronic dyspnea and cough.

Dhumaprayoga: Inhalation of smoke

शमनं च पिबेद्धूमं शोधनं बहले कफे ॥ ६७ ॥
For the cure of kapha Kasa, Samana dhuma (smoke of herbs which mitigate the Doshas) should be inhaled and Sodhana Dhuma (purifactory smoke inhalation) should be done when there is thick kapha.

Dhumaprayoga: Inhalation of smoke

मनःशिलालमधुकमांसीमुस्तेङ्गुदीत्वचः ।
धूमं कासघ्नविधिना पीत्वा क्षीरं पिबेदनु ॥ ६८ ॥
निष्ठ्यूतान्ते गुडयुतं कोष्णं धूमो निहन्ति सः ।
वातश्लेष्मोत्तरान्कासानचिरेण चिरन्तनान् ॥ ६९ ॥
Smoke of realgar orpiment, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Nardostachys jatamansi, Cyperus rotundus and Bark of Balanites aegyptiaca together, inhaled in the prescribed procedure. This cures cough, called Kasaghna Dhoopa, followed by drinking of warm milk added with jaggery after expectoration of sputum. This inhalation quickly cures cough with the predominance of Vata and kapha which is chronic.

Pittaja Kasa line of treatment in Kaphaja Kasa

तमकः कफकासे तु स्याच्चेत् पित्तानुबन्धजः ।
पित्तकासक्रियां तत्र यथावस्थं प्रयोजयेत् ॥ ७० ॥
In the course of Kaphakasa, there appears Tamaka (a variety of svasa/ Dysponea) arising from Pitta as secondary dosha. Then the methods of treatment prescribed for Pittaja kasa (cough of pitta origin) should be administered as appropriate to the stage of the disease).

Treating kapha kasa based on its association with vata or pitta

कफानुबन्धे पवने कुर्यात् कफहरां क्रियाम् ।
पित्तानुबन्धयोर्वातकफयोः पित्तनाशिनीम् ॥ ७१ ॥
वातश्लेष्मात्मके शुष्के स्निग्धमार्द्रे विरूक्षणम् ।
कासे कर्म सपित्ते तु कफजे तिक्तसंयुतम् ॥ ७२ ॥
When vata is associated with Kapha as the secondary dosha, then anti-kapha treatments should be done; when Vata and Kapha are associated with Pitta, then anti-pitta treatments should be done; when cough originates from vata and kapha and is dry, then treatment should be predominant with unctuous quality. When cough is moist then treatment should be dominant with dryness quality. In Kaphaja kasa, associated with Pitta, drying treatment should be given with bitter herbs.

उरस्यन्तःक्षते सद्यो लाक्षां क्षौद्रयुतां पिबेत् ।
क्षीरेण शालीन्जीर्णेऽद्यात् क्षीरेणैव सशर्करान् ॥ ७३ ॥
पार्श्वबस्तिसरुक् चाल्पपित्ताग्निस्तां सुरायुताम् ।
भिन्नविट्कः समुस्तातिविषापाठां सवत्सकाम् ॥ ७४ ॥
If there is injury inside the chest (lungs), then Laccifer lacca mixed with honey should be consumed with milk immediately; after it gets digested, he should eat cooked rice with only milk, added with sugar. He who has pain in the flanks and region of the bladder, with mild increase of Pitta and digestion strength should consume it Laccifer lacca along with Sura (alcohol), if patient complains of loose stools, Laccifer lacca remedy should be consumed with musta (Cyperus rotundus), Aconitum hererophyllum, Cissampelos pareira and Vatsaka Holarrhena antidysenterica

लाक्षां सर्पिर्मधूच्छिष्टं जीवनीयं गणं सिताम् ।
त्वक्क्षीरीं समितं क्षीरे पक्त्वा दीप्तानलः पिबेत् ॥ ७५ ॥
Laccifer lacca, ghee, Madhucchista (bee wax), herbs of Jivaniya (chapter 15 of Sutrasthana), sugar, Bambusa bambos, Triticum aestivum cooked in milk should be consumed by the patient who has strong digestion strength.

यवानां चूर्णमामानां क्षीरे सिद्धं घृतान्वितम् ।

ज्वरदाहे सिताक्षौद्रसक्तून्वा पयसा पिबेत् ॥ ७७ ॥
Flour of ama Yava (unfried, uncooked Barley – Hordeum vulgare) is boiled with milk and consumed along with ghee, when there is fever and burning sensation; or it can be consumed along with sugar, honey, flour and milk mixed together may be consumed.

कासवांस्तु पिबेत् सर्पिर्मधुरौषधसाधितम् ।
गुडोदकं वा क्वथितं सक्षौद्रमरिचं हितम् ॥ ७८ ॥
चूर्णमामलकानां वा क्षीरे पक्वं घृतान्वितम् ।
रसायनविधानेन पिप्पलीर्वा प्रयोजयेत् ॥ ७९ ॥
The patient of cough should drink ghee, processed with herbs of sweet taste or a solution of jaggery (molasses) boiled, cooled and then mixed with honey and powder of Piper nigrum, is beneficial; or powder of Emblica officinalis boiled in milk and mixed with ghee or Piper longum should be used, may be administered in the Rasayana procedure (chapter 39/93- 103 of uttarasthana).

कासी पर्वास्थिशूली च लिह्यात् सघृतमाक्षिकाः ।
मधूकमधुकद्राक्षात्वक्क्षीरीपिप्पलीबलाः ॥ ८० ॥

The patient of cough associated with pain in the ribs should lick the powder of Madhuca longifolia, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Vitis vinifera, Bambusa bambos, Piper longum and Sida cordifolia mixed with ghee and honey.

त्रिजातमर्धकर्षांशं पिप्पल्यर्धपलं सिता ।
द्राक्षा मधूकं खर्जूरं पलाशं श्लक्ष्णचूर्णितम् ॥ ८१ ॥
मधुना गुटिका घ्नन्ति ता वृष्याः पित्तशोणितम् ।
कासश्वासारुचिच्छर्दिमूर्छाहिध्मामदभ्रमान् ॥ ८२ ॥
क्षतक्षयस्वरभ्रंशप्लीहशोषाढ्यमारुतान् ।
रक्तनिष्ठीवहृत्पार्श्वरुक्पिपासाज्वरानपि ॥ ८३ ॥
6 grams of each of Trijataka, half Pala of Piper longum one Pala each of sita (sugar), Vitis vinifera, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Phoenix dactylifera, Butea monosperma are powdered nicely and made into pills along with honey. These pills are aphrodisiac and cures bleeding disorders cough, dyspnea, anorexia, vomiting, fainting, hiccup, intoxication, giddiness, chest injuries, depletion of tissues (tuberculosis), depletion of voice, diseases of the spleen, consumption (tuberculosis), Adhyamaruta (gout), spitting of blood, pain of the heart and flanks, severe thirst and also fever.

वर्षाभूशर्करारक्तशालितण्डुलजं रजः ।
रक्तष्ठीवी पिबेत्सिद्धं द्राक्षारसपयोघृतैः ॥ ८४ ॥
मधूकमधुकक्षीरसिद्धं वा तण्डुलीयकम् ।
Patients of haemoptysis should take powder of Boerhavia diffusa, sugar, flour of red rice – Oryza sativa mixed / processed with juice of Vitis vinifera, milk and ghee, or powder Madhuca longifolia Glycyrrhiza glabra boiled with milk and Amaranthus spinosus.

यथास्वं मार्गविसृते रक्ते कुर्याच्च भेषजम् ॥ ८५ ॥
When there is bleeding from other passages, appropriate treatment as described in the treatment of Raktapitta (Bleeding disease) should be adopted.

मूढवातस्त्वजामेदः सुराभृष्टं ससैन्धवम् ।
क्षामः क्षीणः क्षतोरस्को मन्दनिद्रोऽग्निदीप्तिमान् ॥ ८६ ॥
शृतक्षीरसरेणाद्यात् सघृतक्षौद्रशर्करम् ।
When there is inactive vata or loss of movement of the body parts, non-elimination of feces, flatus, urine etc). The fat of goat fried in sura (beer) and mixed with rock salt should be consumed. The patient who is debilitated, emaciated, having injury in the chest, less sleep, with good digestion strength should consume fat of goat along with boiled milk, ghee, honey or sugar.

शर्करायवगोधूमंजीवकर्षभकौमधु॥८७॥
शृतक्षीरानुपानंवालिह्यात्क्षीणःक्षतःकृशः।
Patient who is debilitated by chest injury, or emaciated should consume / lick sugar, Hordeum vulgare, Triticum aestivum, Malaxis muscifrea and Malaxis acuminata, mixed with honey followed by boiled milk, as the vehicle.

तालमस्तकजम्बूत्वक्प्रियालैश्चसपद्मकैः।
साश्वकर्णैःशृतात्क्षीरादद्याज्जातेनसर्पिषा॥९०॥
शाल्योदनंक्षतोरस्कःक्षीणशुक्रबलेन्द्रियः।
He should drink the soup of meat of carnivorus animals, fried in ghee and mixed with Piper longum and honey. It promotes increase of muscles and blood. Milk is boiled with Ficus bengalensis, Ficus racemosa, Ficus religiosa, Ficus virens, Shorea robusta, Priyangu Callicarpa macrophylla, Sweet sap of Borassus flabellifer, bark of Syzygium cumini and Buchnania lanzan, Prunus cerasoides and Dipterocarpus alatus ghee obtained from this milk should be consumed along with cooked rice, by the patient who has injury inside the chest, decreased semen, strength and depleted strength of sense organs.

वातपित्तार्दितेऽभ्यङ्गो गात्रभेदे घृतैर्मतः ॥ ९१ ॥
तैलैश्चानिलरोगघ्नैः पीडिते मातरिश्वना ।
हृत्पार्श्वार्तिषु पानं स्याज्जीवनीयस्य सर्पिषः ॥ ९२ ॥
कुर्याद्वा वातरोगघ्नं पित्तरक्ताविरोधि यत् ।
यष्ट्याह्वनागबलयोः क्वाथे क्षीरसमे घृतम् ॥ ९३ ॥
पयस्यापिप्पलीवांशीकल्कैः सिद्धं क्षते हितम् ।
In case of cutting / splitting pain all over the body caused by vata and Pitta together, massage should be done, with medicated ghee. When afflicted by vata, medicated oil massage is preferred. In case of pain in the region of the heart and flanks, ghee processed with herbs of Jivaniya Gana should be administered for drinking (oleation therapy) or other Vata balancing treatments and which are not antagonistic to Pitta and Rakta should be done. Medicated ghee prepared with the decoction of Glycyrrhiza glabra and Sida veronicaefolia; with equal quantity of milk with the herbal paste prepared from Ipomoea paniculata, Piper longum and Bambusa arundinacea is beneficial in case of injury.

Amritaprasha Ghrita

जीवनीयो गणः शुण्ठी वरी वीरा पुनर्नवा ॥ ९४ ॥
बलाभार्गीस्वगुप्तर्द्धिशठीतामलकीकणाः ।
शृङ्गाटकं पयस्या च पञ्चमूलं च यल्लघु ॥ ९५ ॥
द्राक्षाक्षोटादि च फलं मधुरस्निग्धबृंहणम् ।
तैः पचेत्सर्पिषः प्रस्थं कर्षांशैः श्लक्ष्णकल्कितैः ॥ ९६ ॥
क्षीरधात्रीविदारीक्षुच्छागमांसरसान्वितम् ।
प्रस्थार्धं मधुनः शीते शर्करार्धतुलारजः ॥ ९७ ॥
पलार्धकं च मरिचत्वगेलापत्रकेसरम् ।
विनीय प्रसृतं तस्माल्लिह्यान्मात्रां यथाबलम् ॥ ९८ ॥
अमृतप्राशमित्येतन्नराणाममृतं घृतम् ।
सुधामृतरसं प्राश्यं क्षीरमांसरसाशिना ॥ ९९ ॥
नष्टशुक्रक्षतक्षीणदुर्बलव्याधिकर्शितान् ।
स्त्रीप्रसक्तान्कृशान्वर्णस्वरहीनांश्च बृंहयेत् ॥ १०० ॥
कासहिध्माज्वरश्वासदाहतृष्णास्रपित्तनुत् ।
पुत्रदं छर्दिमूर्छाहृद्योनिमूत्रामयापहम् ॥ १०१ ॥
Medicated ghee is prepared with the decoction of herbs of Jivaniya Gana, Zingiber officinale, Asparagus racemosus, Pueraria tuberosa, Boerhavia diffusa, Sida cordifolia, Clerodendrum serratum, Mucuna pruriens, Habeneria intermidia, Curcuma zedoaria, Phyllanthus niruri, Piper longum, Trapanosum bispinosa, and Euphorbia prostrate, and herbs of Laghu pancamula, Vitis vinifera, Juglans regia and other fruits which are sweet, unctuous, and nourishing; each taken in one Karsa – 12 grams quantity made into fine paste, added with milk, juice of Emblica officinalis, juice of Pueraria tuberosa, juice of Saccharum officinarum, mixed with juice of goat’s meat all these should be cooked together, with one Prastha of ghee. After it cools down, half prastha of honey – 384 ml half tula -2.4 kg of sugar powder, and powders of half pala – 24 g of each of Piper nigrum, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Elettaria cardamomum, Cinnamomum tamala, Mesua ferrea, should be added to already prepared ghrita and licked in a dose which is appropriate to one’s strength. To human beings, this medicine, which is known as Amrtaprasa Ghrta, is equal to nectar because of its superior qualities also equal to nectar and elixir for Gods. Its consumption should be followed by having milk, meat soup and rice. It cures loss of semen, chest injuries emaciation / tuberculosis, those who have been emaciated due to chronic diseases. It is beneficial for those who over indulge in women (sex), emaciated, who have lost color and voice, nourishes the persons, it cures cough, hiccup, fever, dyspnea, burning sensation, thirst, bleeding disease, vomiting, fainting, diseases of the heart, Vagina (and Uterus) and disorders of urine and bestows children.

Shvadamstradi Ghrita

श्वदंष्ट्रोशीरमञ्जिष्ठाबलाकाश्मर्यकट्तृणम् ।
दर्भमूलं पृथक्पर्णीं पलाशर्षभकौ स्थिराम् ॥ १०२ ॥
पालिकानि पचेत्तेषां रसे क्षीरचतुर्गुणे ।
कल्कैः स्वगुप्ताजीवन्तीमेदर्षभकजीवकैः ॥ १०३ ॥
शतावर्यृद्धिमृद्वीकाशर्कराश्रावणीबिसैः ।
प्रस्थः सिद्धो घृताद्वातपित्तहृद्रोगशूलनुत् ॥ १०४ ॥
मूत्रकृच्छ्रप्रमेहार्शःकासशोषक्षयापहः ।
धनुःस्त्रीमद्यभाराध्वखिन्नानां बलमांसदः ॥ १०५ ॥
Medicated ghee is prepared with the juice / decoction from one Pala – 48 g of each of Tribulus terrestris, Vetiveria zizanioides, Rubia cordifolia, Sida cordifolia, Gmelina arborea, Cymbopogon schoenanthus, root of Desmostachya bipinnata, Uraria picta, Butea monosperma, Manilkara hexandra, Desmodium gangeticum, Milk four times in quantity, paste of Mucuna pruriens, Leptadenia reticulate, Polygonatum verticillatum, Microstylis muscifera, Malaxis acuminata, Asparagus racemosus, Habenaria edgeworthii, Vitis vinifera, sugar, Sphaeranthus indicus, Nelumbo nucifera, one

Prastha of Ghee. This recipe cures the pain of the heart caused by Vata and Pitta, Dysuria, diabetes, urinary tract disorders, haemorrhoids, cough, consumption, emaciation, it bestows muscles and strength to persons debilitated by, archery, women (sex), wine, carrying load, and walking long distance.

Madhukadi Ghrita

मधुकाष्टपलद्राक्षाप्रस्थक्वाथे पचेद्घृतम् ।
पिप्पल्यष्टपले कल्के प्रस्थं सिद्धे च शीतले ॥ १०६ ॥
पृथगष्टपलं क्षौद्रशर्कराभ्यां विमिश्रयेत् ।
समसक्तु क्षतक्षीणरक्तगुल्मेषु तद्धितम् ॥ १०७ ॥
Eight Pala of Glycyrrhiza glabra- 384 g and one Prastha – 768 g of Vitis vinifera, are made into decoction; to it, the paste of eight Pala – 384 g of Piper longum is added, and one Prastha – 768 g of ghee is cooked along with it. When ghrita is done and when it cools, eight Pala– 384 g of each of honey, sugar, are also added and consumed along with balls of corn flour as staple food. It is beneficial in patients suffering from who are emaciated by injury to the chest and tumor of uterus or ovary.

Dhatryadi Ghrita

धात्रीफलविदारीक्षुजीवनीयरसाद्घृतात् ।
गव्याजयोश्च पयसोः प्रस्थं प्रस्थं विपाचयेत् ॥ १०८ ॥
सिद्धशीते सिताक्षौद्रं द्विप्रस्थं विनयेत् ततः ।
यक्ष्मापस्मारपित्तासृक्कासमेहक्षयापहम् ॥ १०९ ॥
वयःस्थापनमायुष्यं मांसशुक्रबलप्रदम् ।
Medicated ghee is prepared from one Prastha – 768 ml of each of – Juice of Emblica officinalis, Pueraria tuberosa, Saccharum officinarum, and herbs of Jivaniya Gana (vide chapter 15 of Sutrasthana), one prastha – 768 g of ghee cow’s milk, and Goat’s milk. After it cools, two Prastha each of sugar, honey, are added. It relieves pulmonary tuberculosis, epilepsy, bleeding diseases, cough, diabetes, consumption etc gets cured, reverses ageing bestows long life, improves strength of muscles and immunity.

Licking and drinking of ghee in high pitta and vata respectively

घृतं तु पित्तेऽभ्यधिके लिह्याद्वातेऽधिके पिबेत् ॥ ११० ॥
लीढं निर्वापयेत् पित्तमल्पत्वाद्धन्ति नानलम् ।
आक्रामत्यनिलं पीतमूष्माणं निरुणद्धि च ॥ १११ ॥
When Pitta is greatly increased medicated ghee should be licked (in medium dose) and when vata is greatly increases it should be consumed (in maximum dose); ghee licked being less in quantity subsides/mitigates Pitta but does not decrease digestive fire. Ghee drunk, envelops vata and quickly stops the digestive fire (from hyper-functioning).

Licking and drinking of ghee in high pitta and vata respectively

क्षामक्षीणकृशाङ्गानामेतान्येव घृतानि तु ।
त्वक्क्षीरीशर्करालाजचूर्णैः स्त्यानानि योजयेत् ॥ ११२ ॥
सर्पिर्गुडान्समध्वंशान्कृत्वा दद्यात्पयोऽनु च ।
रेतो वीर्यं बलं पुष्टिं तैराशुतरमाप्नुयात् ॥ ११३ ॥
For persons who are emaciated, debilitated and having  weak body, the above mentioned medicated ghee or other  similar ghees should be administered when these are in solid state mixed with powder of Bambusa arundinacea, sugar, fried paddy, ghee and jaggery, added in equal quantities, should be consumed followed by drinking of milk. This bestows quick increase in nourishment of semen, enthusiasm, vigour and strength.

Kushmanda Rasayana

वीतत्वगस्थिकूष्माण्डतुलां स्विन्नां पुनः पचेत् ।
घट्टयन्सर्पिषः प्रस्थे क्षौद्रवर्णेऽत्र च क्षिपेत् ॥ ११४ ॥
खण्डाच्छतं कणाशुण्ठ्योर्द्विपलं जीरकादपि ।
त्रिजातधान्यमरिचं पृथगर्धपलांशकम् ॥ ११५ ॥
अवतारितशीते च दत्त्वा क्षौद्रं घृतार्धकम् ।
खजेनामथ्य च स्थाप्यं तन्निहन्त्युपयोजितम् ॥ ११६ ॥
कासहिध्माज्वरश्वासरक्तपित्तक्षतक्षयान् ।
उरःसन्धानजननं मेधास्मृतिबलप्रदम् ॥ ११७ ॥
अश्विभ्यां विहितं हृद्यं कूष्माण्डकरसायनम् ।
Benincasa hispida after removing its skin and seeds, is taken in 1 tula quantity – 4.8 kg, is baked in steam, cut into small pieces, and fried using 1 prastha of ghee – 768 g; till it assumes the color of honey. To it, are added one hundred Pala of sugar candy – 4.8 kg two Pala – 96 g of each of Piper longum, Zingiber officinale, Cuminum cyminum, Cinnamomum zeylanicum, Elettaria cardamomum & Cinnamomum tamala, Coriandrum sativum, Piper nigrum are added in quantity of half pala individually. When it gets cool, it is added with half pala – 24 g of each of honey and ghee and churned well with a ladle and preserved. Used in appropriate dose daily, it cures cough, hiccup, fever, dyspnoea, bleeding disease, injury to chest and consumption, heals the ulcer in the chest, bestows intelligence, memory and strength. Formulated by the Asvini twins, this KusmandaRasayanam is a tonic to the heart.

Nagabala Rasayana

पिबेन्नागबलामूलस्यार्धकर्षाभिवर्धितम् ॥ ११८ ॥
पलं क्षीरयुतं मासं क्षीरवृत्तिरनन्नभुक् ।
एष प्रयोगः पुष्ट्यायुर्बलवर्णकरः परम् ॥ ११९ ॥
मण्डूकपर्ण्याः कल्पोऽयं यष्ट्या विश्वौषधस्य च ।
One Pala – 48 ml of juice of roots of Sida veronicaefolia, mixed with milk should be consumed daily, increasing the dose by half Karsa – 6 ml, every succeeding day, for one month, during this period, the person; should drink only the milk, and abstain from eating solid food. This recipe is best to promote nourishment, life span, strength and color/ complexion. In the same way recipe can be prepared from Centella asiatica, Glycyrrhiza glabra and Zingiber officinale.

Nagabala Ghrita

पादशेषं जलद्रोणे पचेन्नागबलातुलाम् ॥ १२० ॥
तेन क्वाथेन तुल्यांशं घृतं क्षीरं च साधयेत् ।
पलार्धिकैश्चातिबलाबलायष्टीपुनर्नवैः ॥ १२१ ॥
प्रपौण्डरीककाश्मर्यप्रियालकपिकच्छुभिः ।
अश्वगन्धासिताभीरुमेदायुग्मत्रिकण्टकैः ॥ १२२ ॥
काकोलीक्षीरकाकोलीक्षीरशुक्लाद्विजीरकैः ।
मृणालबिसखर्जूरशृङ्गाटककसेरुकैः ॥ १२३ ॥
एतन्नागबलासर्पिः पित्तरक्तक्षतक्षयान् ।
जयेत्तृड्भ्रमदाहांश्च बलपुष्टिकरं परम् ॥ १२४ ॥
वर्ण्यमायुष्यमोजस्यं वलीपलितनाशनम् ।
उपयुज्य च षण्मासान्वृद्धोऽपि तरुणायते ॥ १२५ ॥
One Tula – 4.8 kg of Sida veronicaefolia is boiled in one Drona of water decoction reduced to one fourth; to this decoction, the below things are added in equal quantities ghee and milk and processed and powder of half Pala each of Abutilon indicum, Sida cordifolia, Glycyrrhiza glabra, Boerhavia diffusa, Nelumbo nucifera, Gmelina arborea, Buchanania lanzan, Mucuna pruriens, Withania somnifera, Sugar, Asparagus racemosus, Polygonatum verticillatum and Polygonatum cirrhifolium, Tribulus terrestris, Roscoea procera, Lilium polyphyllum, Manilkara hexandra / Trapa bispinosa, Cuminum cyminum and Carum carvi, Nymphaea stellata, Nelumbo nucifera, Phoenix dactylifera, Trapa bispinosa, Scirpus grossus and medicated ghee prepared. This recipe, Nagabala Sarpis cures bleeding disease, injury to the chest, consumption, and cures thirst, giddiness and burning sensation; best to give strength, nourishment, bestows color, longevity, enhances essence of all tissues cures wrinkled skin and greying of hairs if used for six months, even old persons become young.

Use of dipana, pachana and grahi medicines

दीप्तेऽग्नौ विधिरेष स्यान्मन्दे दीपनपाचनः ।
यक्ष्मोक्तः क्षतिनां शस्तो ग्राही शकृति तु द्रवे ॥ १२६ ॥
These treatments are meant for those who have strong digestion strength; for those who have weak digestion strength, therapies such as dipana (carminative) and Pacana (digestive) described in the treatment of yaksma (vide chapter 5 of Chikitsa sthana) are ideal; when the feces is in liquid state, it should be controlled by herbs which have quality of absorbing water.

Agastya (haritaki) Rasayana

दशमूलं स्वयङ्गुप्तां शङ्खपुष्पीं शठीं बलाम् ।
हस्तिपिप्पल्यपामार्गपिप्पलीमूलचित्रकान् ॥ १२७ ॥
भार्गीं पुष्करमूलं च द्विपलांशं यवाढकम् ।
हरीतकीशतं चैकं जलपञ्चाढके पचेत् ॥ १२८ ॥
यवस्वेदे कषायं तं पूतं तच्चाभयाशतम् ।
पचेद्गुडतुलां दत्त्वा कुडवं च पृथग्घृतात् ॥ १२९ ॥
तैलात्सपिप्पलीचूर्णात्सिद्धशीते च माक्षिकात् ।
लेहं द्वे चाभये नित्यमतः खादेद्रसायनात् ॥ १३० ॥
तद्वलीपलितं हन्याद्वर्णायुर्बलवर्धनम् ।
पञ्चकासान्क्षयं श्वासं सहिध्मं विषमज्वरम् ॥ १३१ ॥
मेहगुल्मग्रहण्यर्शोहृद्रोगारुचिपीनसान् ।
अगस्त्यविहितं धन्यमिदं श्रेष्ठं रसायनम् ॥ १३२ ॥
Two Pala  – 96 g of each of group of 10 roots, Mucuna pruriens, Convolvulus pluricaulis, Curcuma zedoaria, Sida cordifolia, Scindapsus officinalis, Achyranthes aspera, Roots of Piper longum, Plumbago zeylanica, Clerodendrum phlomidis and Inula racemosa 3.072 kg of Hordeum vulgare, Terminalia chebula one hundred by number, are well-cooked in 3.072 liters of water, when Hordeum vulgare is steam cooked properly, the decoction is filtered, (steam boiled) hundred Terminalia chebula fruits are taken out of the decoction and again cooked along with one Tula – 4.8 kg of jaggery, and  192 g or ml of e each of ghee oil of sesme, powder of Piper longum fruit, and when the ingredients are cooked and gets cooled, honey is added. This confection consumed daily in the dose of two Terminalia chebula fruit size per day is a rejuvenator, dispels wrinkles and graying of hair, bestows color / complexion, life span and, strength, cures the five kinds of cough, consumption, dyspnoea, hiccup, irregular fevers, diabetes, abdominal tumors, intestinal disorders, haemorrhoids, heart diseases, anorexia and nasal catarrh. This Rasayana, formulated by sage Agastya, is a best rejuvenator.

Vasistha (Haritaki) Rasayana

दशमूलं बलां मूर्वां हरिद्रे पिप्पलीद्वयम् ।
पाठाश्वगन्धापामार्गस्वगुप्तातिविषामृताः ॥ १३३ ॥
बालबिल्वं त्रिवृद्दन्तीमूलं पत्रं च चित्रकात् ।
पयस्यां कुटजं हिंस्रां पुष्पं सारं च बीजकात् ॥ १३४ ॥
बोटस्थविरभल्लातविकङ्कतशतावरीः ।
पूतिकरञ्जशम्याकचन्द्रलेखासहाचरम् ॥ १३५ ॥
शौभाञ्जनकनिम्बत्वगिक्षुरं च पलांशकम् ।
पथ्यासहस्रं सशतं यवानां चाढकद्वयम् ॥ १३६ ॥
पचेदष्टगुणे तोये यवस्वेदेऽवतारयेत् ।
पूते क्षिपेत्सपथ्ये च तत्र जीर्णगुडात्तुलाम् ॥ १३७ ॥
तैलाज्यधात्रीरसतः प्रस्थं प्रस्थं ततः पुनः ।
अधिश्रयेन्मृदावग्नौ दर्वीलेपेऽवतार्य च ॥ १३८ ॥
शीते प्रस्थद्वयं क्षौद्रात्पिप्पलीकुडवं क्षिपेत् ।
चूर्णीकृतं त्रिजाताच्च त्रिपलं निखनेत्ततः ॥ १३९ ॥
धान्ये पुराणकुम्भस्थं मासं खादेच्च पूर्ववत् ।
रसायनं वसिष्ठोक्तमेतत् पूर्वगुणाधिकम् ॥ १४० ॥
स्वस्थानां निष्परीहारं सर्वर्तुषु च शस्यते ।
One pala each of Dashamula, Sida cordifolia, Marsdenia tenacissima, Curcuma longa & Berberis aristata, Piper longum and Scindapsus officinalis, Cissampelos pareira, Withania somnifera, Achyranthes aspera, Mucuna pruriens, Aconitum heterophyllum, Tinospora cordifolia, unripe fruit of Aegle marmelos, Operculina turpethum, Baliospermum montanum, leaves of Plumbago zeylanica; Fritillaria roylei, Holarrhena antidysenterica, Capparis spinosa, flowers and resin of Pterocarpus marsupeum, Sphaeranthus indicus, Semecarpus anacardium, Flacourtica indica, Asparagus racemosus, Caesalpinia bonduc, Cassia fistula, Psoralea corylifolia, Strobilanthes heynianus, Moringa oleifera, Azadirachta indica, Saccharum officinarum; Terminalia chebula one thousand and one hundred in number two Adhaka – 6.144 kg of Hordeum vulgare are boiled in eight times of water; Hordeum vulgare is well steam-cooked, the decoction is filtered Terminalia chebula is taken out separately and again cooked, adding one tula – 4.8 kg of old Guda, One Prastha – 768 g or ml of each of sesame oil, ghee juice of (fresh) Emblica officinalis, cooking over mild fire till the confection adheres to the Laddle, and then out of the fire. After it cools, two Prastha – 1.536 ml of honey and one

Kudava of Piper longum are added, and Three Pala – 144 g of powder of Trijata, are added. It is then transferred into an old mud pot, and kept concealed in a heap of corn for one month. Taken out later and consumed in the same manner described earlier, this Rasayana formulated by sage Vasistha, is more effective than the previous one, is unavoidable to the healthy (always necessary) and ideal in all seasons.

Saindhavadi Churna

पालिकं सैन्धवं शुण्ठी द्वे च सौवर्चलात्पले ॥ १४१ ॥
कुडवांशानि वृक्षाम्लं दाडिमं पत्रमार्जकात् ।
एकैकां मरीचजाज्योर्धान्यकाद्द्वेे चतुर्थिके ॥ १४२ ॥
शर्करायाः पलान्यत्र दश द्वे च प्रदापयेत् ।
कृत्वा चूर्णमतो मात्रामन्नपानेषु दापयेत् ॥ १४३ ॥
रुच्यं तद्दीपनं बल्यं पार्श्वार्तिश्वासकासजित् ।
One Pala each of rock salt, Zingiber officinale two Pala – 96 g of black salt, Kudava – 192 g of each of Garcinia indica, Punica granatum, leaves of Arjaka Ocimum basilicum, One Pala  – 48 g of each of Piper nigrum, Cuminum cyminum, two Chaturthika (pala) – Coriandrum sativum, twenty Pala – 960 g of sugar are all converted into fine powder and should be consumed in proper dose along with food and drinks. It improves taste, hunger, strength, and cures pain in the flanks, dysponea, and cough.

Shadava Churna

एकां षोडशिकां धान्याद्द्वे द्वे चाजाजिदीप्यकात् ॥ १४४ ॥
ताभ्यां दाडिमवृक्षाम्ले द्विर्द्विः सौवर्चलात् पलम् ।
शुण्ठ्याः कर्षं दधित्थस्य मध्यात् पञ्च पलानि च ॥ १४५ ॥
तच्चूर्णं षोडशपलैः शर्कराया विमिश्रयेत्|
षाडवोऽयं प्रदेयः स्यादन्नपानेषु पूर्ववत्||१४६||
One Karsha – 12 g of Coriandrum sativum, two each (Karsha)  – 24 g of Cuminum cyminum, Trachyspermum ammi, double the total of these two will be Punica granatum, Garcinia indica one pala – 48 g of black salt, one karsa of Zingiber officinale five Pala – 240 g of Marrow of Limonia acidissima, sixteen pala – 768 g of Sugar and are mixed together and converted into fine powder. This Sadava should be administered along with food and drink, as described earlier.

Treatment of Yakshma (Pulmonary tuberculosis) in Kshataja Kasa

विधिश्च यक्ष्मविहितो यथावस्थं क्षते हितः ।
निवृत्ते क्षतदोषे तु कफे वृद्ध उरः शिरः ॥ १४७ ॥
दाल्यते कासिनो यस्य स ना धूमान्पिबेदिमान् ।
द्विमेदाद्विबलायष्टीकल्कैः क्षौमे सुभाविते ॥ १४८ ॥
वर्तिं कृत्वा पिबेद्धूमं जीवनीयघृतानुपः ।
मनःशिलापलाशाजगन्धात्वक्क्षीरिनागरैः ॥ १४९ ॥
तद्वदेवानुपानं तु शर्करेक्षुगुडोदकम् ।
पिष्ट्वा मनःशिलां तुल्यामार्द्रया वटशुङ्गया ॥ १५० ॥
ससर्पिष्कं पिबेद्धूमं तित्तिरिप्रतिभोजनम् ।
All treatments, prescribed stage-wise for Pulmonary tuberculosis are also beneficial in Ksataja Kasa. When the wound (inside the chest) is relieved, kapha is found to increase; producing splitting pain in the chest and head in a patient of cough, such a person should inhale the following smoke. Cloth made of linen, soaked in the paste of Polygonatum verticillatum and Polygonatum cirrhifolium, Sida cordifolia and Abuliton indicum, Glycyrrhiza glabra then made into a wick and smoked, followed by drinking of jivaniya Ghrta. Realgar, Butea monosperma, Cleome gynandra, Bamboo manna and Zingiber officinale to be used similarly followed by drinking of sugar water, sugarcane juice or solution of Jaggery. Equal quantities of realgar and tender sprouts of Vata should be ground and made into wick, smeared with ghee and smoked, followed by eating of flesh of Tittiri bird mainly.

Kshaya Kasa Chikitsa (Treatment of cough due to consumptions)

क्षयजे बृंहणं पूर्वं कुर्यादग्नेश्च वर्धनम् ॥ १५१ ॥
बहुदोषाय सस्नेहं मृदु दद्याद्विरेचनम् ।
शम्याकेन त्रिवृतया मृद्वीकारसयुक्तया ॥ १५२ ॥
तिल्वकस्य कषायेण विदारीस्वरसेन च ।
सर्पिः सिद्धं पिबेद्युक्त्या क्षीणदेहो विशोधनम् ॥ १५३ ॥
In Ksaya kasa, nourishing, stoutening therapy should be done first along with increasing the power of digestive fire. For the person who has profound increase of Dosha, a mild purgative drug mixed with fats should be given, by using ghee processed with Cassia fistula, Operculina turpethum, juice of Vitis vinifera or decoction of Symplocos racemosa along with fresh juice of Pueraria tuberosa, if used wisely this purifies the body of a weak person.

Karkatakyadi Ghritam in Kshaya Kasa

पित्ते कफे धातुषु च क्षीणेषु क्षयकासवान् ।
घृतं कर्कटकीक्षीरद्विबलासाधितं पिबेत् ॥ १५४ ॥
विदारीभिः कदम्बैर्वा तालसस्यैश्च साधितम् ।
घृतं पयश्च
The patient of ksaya kasa who has decrease of pitta, kapha and tissues should drink ghee processed with milk, Pistacia chinensis, Sida cordifolia and Abutilon indicum or ghee or milk processed with Pueraria tuberosa Neolamarckia cadamba Borassus flabellifer.

Anuvasana Basti: Unctuous enema in Kshaya Kasa

मूत्रस्य वैवर्ण्ये कृच्छ्रनिर्गमे ॥ १५५ ॥
शूने सवेदने मेढ्रे पायौ सश्रोणिवङ्क्षणे ।
घृतमण्डेन लघुनानुवास्यो मिश्रकेण वा ॥ १५६ ॥
When there is change of urine color, difficulty in urination, swelling and pain in the penis, rectum, pelvis and groins, rectum, pelvis and groins, mild lubricating enema with the scum of ghee or mixture of ghee and oil should be administered.

Use of different kinds of meat and meat soups in kshayaja kasa

जाङ्गलैर्प्रतिभुक्तस्य वर्तकाद्या बिलेशयाः ।
क्रमशः प्रसहास्तद्वत् प्रयोज्याः पिशिताशिनः ॥ १५७ ॥
औष्ण्यात् प्रमाथिभावाच्च स्रोतोभ्यश्च्यावयन्ति ते ।
कफं शुद्धैश्च तैः पुष्टिं कुर्यात् सम्यग्वहन्रसः ॥ १५८ ॥
For each meal, flesh of animals of desert – like land, (gallinaceous birds) and others, animals like Vartaka (gallinaceous birds) and others, which live in burrows, or birds of prey, should be taken in that order, for who are accustomed to eat meat, by their hot potency and nature of scraping off and removing the wastes stuck in the channels (dilating the channels), expel the kapha adhering therein, clears the pores for proper movement of rasa Dhatu and provide nourishment (to the tissue).

Chavikadi Ghrita

चविकात्रिफलाभार्गीदशमूलैः सचित्रकैः ।
कुलत्थपिप्पलीमूलपाठाकोलयवैर्जले ॥ १५९ ॥
शृतैर्नागरदुःस्पर्शापिप्पलीशठिपौष्करैः ।
पिष्टैः कर्कटशृङ्ग्या च समैः सर्पिर्विपाचयेत् ॥ १६० ॥
सिद्धेऽस्मिंश्चूर्णितौ क्षारौ द्वौ पञ्च लवणानि च ।
दत्त्वा युक्त्या पिबेन्मात्रां क्षयकासनिपीडितः ॥ १६१ ॥

Medicated ghee should be prepared with the decoction of Piper retrofractum, Triphala, Clerodendrum serratum, group of 10 roots, Plumbago zeylanica, Dolichos biflorus, roots of Piper longum, Cissampelos pareira, Ziziphus mauritiana, Hordeum vulgare, Paste of Zingiber officinale, Alhagi camelorum, Piper longum, Curcuma zedoaria, Inula racemosa, Pistacia chinensis – each equal in quantity. After it is cooled, powder of the two Ksara (yavaksara and SarjaKsara) and five salts (saindhava, Sauvarcala, bida, samudra, Audbhida) are added. This recipe should be consumed in appropriate dose, by the person suffering from Ksayakasa.

Kasamardadi Ghrita

कासमर्दाभयामुस्तापाठाकट्फलनागरैः ।
पिप्पल्या कटुरोहिण्या काश्मर्या सुरसेन च ॥ १६२ ॥
अक्षमात्रैर्घृतप्रस्थं क्षीरद्राक्षारसाढके ।
पचेच्छोषज्वरप्लीहसर्वकासहरं शिवम् ॥ १६३ ॥
Medicated ghee prepared with the: one Aksa –  12 g of each of Cassia occidentalis, Terminalia chebula, Cyperus rotundus, Cissampelos pareira, Myrica nagi, Zingiber officinale Piper longum, Picrorhiza kurroa, Gmelina arborea, Ocimum sanctum, one Prastha – 768 g of Ghrta, one Adhaka each of milk, and juice of – Vitis vinifera. This recipe is best to cure consumption, fever, enlargement of spleen, and all types of cough.

Vrishadi Ghrita

वृषव्याघ्रीगुडूचीनां पत्रमूलफलाङ्कुरात् ।
रसकल्कैर्घृतं पक्वं हन्ति कासज्वरारुचीः ॥ १६४ ॥
Medicated ghee prepared from the juice (decoction) and paste of leaves, roots, fruits and sprouts of Adhatoda vasica, Solanum xanthocarpum, Tinospora cordifolia, cures cough, fever and loss of taste (and appetite)

Dadimadi Ghrita

द्विगुणे दाडिमरसे सिद्धं वा व्योषसंयुतम् ।
पिबेदुपरि भुक्तस्य यवक्षारयुतं नरः ॥ १६५ ॥
पिप्पलीगुडसिद्धं वा छागक्षीरयुतं घृतम् ।
एतान्यग्निविवृद्ध्यर्थं सर्पींषि क्षयकासिनाम् ॥ १६६ ॥
स्युर्दोषबद्धकण्ठोरःस्रोतसां च विशुद्धये ।
One should consume Medicated ghee prepared from (one part of ghrta) two parts of juice of Punica granatum, Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale, alkali of Hordeum vulgare, mixed with after meals. Or medicated ghee prepared with Piper longum, jaggery, Molasses, and Goats milk (may be consumed). These and similar medicated ghee is suitable for patients of ksaya kasa, in order to increase the digestive capacity and clear the passage of the throat and chest from the obstructing Doshas.

Haritaki Leha

प्रस्थोन्मिते यवक्वाथे विंशतिं विजयाः पचेत् ॥ १६७ ॥
स्विन्ना मृदित्वा तास्तस्मिन् पुराणात् षट्पलं गुडात् ।
पिप्पल्या द्विपलं कर्षं मनोह्वाया रसाञ्जनात् ॥ १६८ ॥
दत्त्वार्धाक्षं पचेद्भूयः स लेहः श्वासकासजित् ।
In one prastha – 768 g of decotion of Hordeum vulgare, Twenty (by number of) Terminalia chebula are cooked; those (Terminalia chebula fruits) steamed in the decoction of Hordeum vulgare should be softened (by grinding and made into paste) and then six Pala – 288 g of one year old jaggery, two Pala – 96 g of Piper longum, one karsa – 12 g of realgar, and half Karsa – 6 g of of vitriol of copper are added and confection is prepared. This confection cures dysponea and cough.

Masi Prayoga

श्वाविधां सूचयो दग्धाः सघृतक्षौद्रशर्कराः ॥ १६९ ॥
श्वासकासहरा बर्हिपादौ वा मधुसर्पिषा ।
एरण्डपत्रक्षारं वा व्योषतैलगुडान्वितम् ॥ १७० ॥
लेहयेत् क्षारमेवं वा सुरसैरण्डपत्रजम् ।
लिह्यात् त्र्यूषणचूर्णं वा पुराणगुडसर्पिषा ॥ १७१ ॥
The thorns of porcupine are burnt and the resulting ash licked with ghee, honey and sugar cures dysponea and cough; ash of peacock’s legs (or feathers) licked with honey and ghee, or ash / alkali of leaves of Ricinus communis mixed with Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale sesame oil, jaggery made into a confection and consumed; or alkali alone of Ocimum sanctum, leaves of Ricinus communis should be licked, powder of Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale, old jaggery and ghee cures dysponea and cough.

Padmakadi Churna

पद्मकं त्रिफला व्योषं विडङ्गं देवदारु च ।
बला रास्ना च तच्चूर्णं समस्तं समशर्करम् ॥ १७२ ॥
खादेन्मधुघृताभ्यां वा लिह्यात् कासहरं परम् ।
तद्वन्मरिचचूर्णं वा सघृतक्षौद्रशर्करम् ॥ १७३ ॥
Prunus cerasoides, Terminalia chebula, Terminalia bellirica and Emblica officinalis, Piper longum, Piper nigrum and Zingiber officinale, Embelia ribes, Cedrus deodara, Sida cordifolia, Pluchea lanceolata – the powder of this added with equal quantity of sugar. This should be consumed or licked with honey and ghee. It is best for the cure of cough; similar is the powder of Piper nigrum, Ghee of Adhatoda vasica licked with ghee, honey and sugar.

Pathyadi Gutika

पथ्याशुण्ठीघनगुडैर्गुटिकां धारयेन्मुखे ।
सर्वेषु श्वासकासेषु केवलं वा विभीतकम् ॥ १७४ ॥
Pill prepared from (Powder of) Terminalic chebula, Zingiber officinale, Cyperus rotundus, jaggery should be held in the mouth in all types of dyspnoea and cough; or Termninalia bellirica fruit only may be held in the mouth (and the saliva swallowed).

Use of Tilvaka

पत्रकल्कं घृतभृष्टं तिल्वकस्य सशर्करम् ।
पेया वोत्कारिका छर्दितृट्कासामातिसारजित् ॥ १७५ ॥
Paste of leaves of Viburnum nervosum – fried in ghee, and mixed with sugar, or thin gruel or pancake prepared from it cures vomiting, thirst, cough and diarrhea.

Soup in Kshayaja kasa

कण्टकारीरसे सिद्धो क्षीरं यूषान्रसानपि ।
सगौरामलकः साम्लः सर्वकासभिषग्जितम् ॥ १७६ ॥
Soup of Vigna radiata processed with juice of Solanum xanthocarpum, milk, juice / decoction is made sour by addition of juice of Emblica officinalis is the best medicated which may be prescribed by physician for all kinds of Cough.

Vata mitigating decoctions, soup and meat soup in kshayaja kasa

वातघ्नौषधनिःक्वाथे क्षीरं यूषान्रसानपि ।
वैष्किरान्प्रातुदान्बैलान्दापयेत् क्षयकासिने ॥ १७७ ॥
Decotion of herbs which mitigated vata mixed with milk and soup or juice of animals or birds of Vishkira, pratuda, Bilesaya categories should be given (as food) to the patient of ksayakasa.

Using treatments mentioned in Kshata Kasa and Yakshma in Kshayaja Kasa

क्षतकासे च ये धूमाः सानुपाना निदर्शिताः ।
क्षयकासेऽपि ते योज्या वक्ष्यते यच्च यक्ष्मणि ॥ १७८ ॥
बृंहणं दीपनं चाग्नेः स्रोतसां च विशोधनम् ।
व्यत्यासात् क्षयकासिभ्यो बल्यं सर्वं प्रशस्यते ॥ १७९ ॥
The recipes of smoke and after drinks indicated for Ksatakasa should be adopted in Ksayakasa also. All recipes (of both medicines and foods) mentioned in the treatment of Yaksma (vide chapter 5) which are nourishing, carminative clearing the channels and strengthening are also too be administered to patients of Kshayakasa alternately all these are ideally suited.

Addressing sannipata in Kshayaja Kasa

सन्निपातोद्भवो घोरः क्षयकासो यतस्ततः ।
यथादोषबलं तस्य सन्निपातहितं हितम् ॥ १८० ॥
Since, Kshayakasa is a dreaded disease arising from increase of all the Doshas all treatments, which are suitable to (subdue) the strength of the Doshas are Beneficial.

इति श्री वैद्यपति सिंहगुप्तसूनु श्रीमद्वाग्भटविरचितायामष्टाङ्गहृदयसंहितायां चतुर्थे चिकित्सितस्थाने कासचिकित्सितं नाम तृतीयोऽध्याय: ॥ ३॥
Thus, ends the chapter-Kasa Cikitsita – the third in Chikitsa  Sthana of AstangaHrdaya Samhita, composed by Srimad Vagbhata son, of Sri Vaidyapati Simhagupta.
