Vartmabandha / Vartmavabandha is one of the diseases of the eyelids (netra vartma gata roga). 

Vartmabandha definition, Sanskrit

Classification
Based on the location – Vartmabandha is a Vartmagata Roga (disease occurring in the eyelids).
Based on Predominant Dosha – Vartmabandha is a Tridoshaja Netra Roga i.e. it is caused by simultaneous vitiation of all three doshas.
Based on Sadhya Asadhyata (prognosis) – Vartmabandha is a Sadhya roga (curable disease)
Based on predominant treatment / surgical process used in combating the disease – Vartmabandha eye disorder is a Lekhana Sadhya / Lekhya Netra Roga i.e. curable by administration of scraping treatment.

Vartmabandha, definition, meaning, pathogenesis

Vartmabandha or Vartmavabandha is an eye disorder and occurs in the eyelids. In this condition, the person will not be able to close his eyes completely due to swelling of the eyelids associated with itching and mild pain in eyelids.

Bandha means ‘to be tied up’. Here the eyelids seem to be tied up and are unable to close completely spontaneously due to the swelling of eyelids. The person has to keep his eyes partially closed.

This condition is caused due to simultaneous vitiation of all three doshas. Vartmabandha eye disorder is said to be curable disease and responds to medicines.

Signs and Symptoms of Vartmabandha eye disorder

  • Vartma shopha – swelling of the eyelids
  • Na samam chadayed akshi – the person will not be able to close his eyes properly and completely due to swelling of eyelids and consequent tightening of lids making closure of eyes difficult
  • Kandumata – itching in the eyelids and eyes
  • Alpa vedana – mild pain in the eye / eyelids

Vartmabandha can be correlated with non-inflammatory edema of the eyelids. Read more

Treatment of Vartmavabandha
Vartmabandha is a lekhana sadhya vyadhi. It is one of the eye diseases which can be cured by scraping method.

Extended approach in the treatment of Vartmabandha –
Though not mentioned anywhere in the texts of Ayurveda, I feel we can apply the treatment principles of the below mentioned conditions in the treatment of this edematous condition of the eye.

  • Kaphahara chikitsa – Though vartmabandha is a tridosha disorder, kapha symptoms seem to be present. Medicines and diet having kapha alleviating properties shall be administered. (read – Activities And Diet For Kapha Balance)
  • Shotha Chikitsa – This condition may be treated on the lines of treating swelling as mentioned in Ayurveda. If the oedema keeps occurring detail investigation and thorough examination should be made to rule out involvement of any systemic disorders. At the same time, if the oedema keeps recurring and is stubborn, therapeutic cleansing in the form of emesis and purgation shall be administered.

Ayurveda has given the liberty of situational application of medical knowledge in treating conditions i.e. yukti vyapashraya chikitsa. This gives the freedom for the physician to think out of the box and borrow certain treatment principles explained in the context of treatments of other disorders in treating particular conditions which are not responding to conventional or theoretical treatment approaches.

Bahalavartma, definition, meaning, pathogenesis

Bahalavartma is an eye disorder and occurs in the eyelids. In this condition, the lid is covered from all sides by many lumps / boils / swellings which are alike each other in appearance and also have similar colour as that of the surrounding skin. Bahala means many or multiple, therefore in this condition there are many lumps on the eyelid and thus called bahalavartma.
