Pushparaga (Topaz): Types, Qualities, Shodhana, Marana, Dosage

Pushparaga is a Maharatna which belongs to the Kuruvind category. Its specific gravity is 3.5 and sclerosis is 8. It is a combination of aluminum and sand.

Pushparaga, Pushparaja, Gururatna, Peetaashma, Peetaratna, Guruvallabha.

Brazil, Lanka, Japan, Mexico, California, England and USA.

Types

There are no types explained in Rasa texts. Based on colour, they can be classified as – Yellow, white, red and gray colour.

Suitable characters

पुष्परागो गुरुः स्निग्धः स्वच्छः स्थूलः समो मृदुः ।
कर्णिकारप्रसूनाभो मसृणश्च शुभोऽष्टधा ॥ (र.र.स. ४/२३)
puṣparāgo guruḥ snigdhaḥ svacchaḥ sthūlaḥ samo mṛduḥ |
karṇikāraprasūnābho masṛṇaśca śubho’ṣṭadhā || (ra.ra.sa. 4/23)

Heavy, unctuous, clear, big size, soft to touch, yellow coloured are considered as good qualities of Pushparaga.

Unsuitable characters

निष्प्रभं कर्कशं रूक्षं पीतश्यामं नतोन्नतम ।
कपिशं कपिलं पाण्डु पुष्परागं परित्यजेत ॥ (र.र.स. ४/२४)
niṣprabhaṃ karkaśaṃ rūkṣaṃ pītaśyāmaṃ natonnatama |
kapiśaṃ kapilaṃ pāṇḍu puṣparāgaṃ parityajeta || (ra.ra.sa. 4/24)

Lack of luster, hard, rough, yellowish brown colour, with granulated appearance, black or grey colour are unsuitable characters of Pushparaga.

Qualities

Deepana – carminative, light, digestive,
useful in Visha – poisoning,
Chardi – vomiting,
Kapha, vata – useful in Kapha and Vata imbalance,
Agnimandya – dyspepsia,
Daha – burning sensation and
Kushta – skin disorders.

Indications
Pushparaga bhasma – it is considered ugra when prepared with Haratala and Manahshila. Thus kills microbes and becomes Balya.

Pushparaga pishti – it is considered to be soumya. Indicated in vomit, burning sensation, hemarrhoids, skin disorders, loss of appetite. It is extremely useful in malabsorption syndrome. It removes all bio toxins from all the tissues.

Dose –  31.25 mg – 125 mg

Adjuvants – Honey or as per the disease.

Formulations – Navaratna raja mriganka rasa, Mani parpati, Ratnabhagottara rasa.

Shodhana

1. Swedana in Kulattha kwatha for 3 hours.
2. Swedana in Kanji for 3 hours.

Marana

Pushparaga is added with equal parts of Gandhajam, Manashila and Haratala, given Bhavana with Nimbu swarasa, cakes are prepared and 8 Puta heat is given to obtain its Bhasma.

Dose

¼ – 1 Ratti (31.25 mg to 125 mg) in divided doses per day.
