Mutra Shula Meaning, Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Mutra Shula (shoola) is one among the different types of colic / pain in the abdomen mentioned by Master Sushruta. As the name suggests it is the pain caused in the abdomen by urine or retention of urine. Mutra = urine, Shula = colic / pain in the abdomen

Causes

Mithya Ahara Vihara / Vata Prakopaka Ahara Vihara – Incompatible foods and life activities or foods and activities which aggravate vata in the body are the main causes for obstruction of urine and the pain caused from the same.

Pathogenesis

  • Due to excessive consumption of unwholesome foods and life activities there occurs severe aggravation of vata
  • This aggravated vata causes obstruction of urine after having caused severe pain in the penis (urinary passage) and intestine / colon
  • Following this the patient experiences severe pain in the navel region, groins, both flanks (sides of the abdomen) and the entire abdomen
  • This painful condition caused by vitiated vata is called mootra shoola

Symptoms

  • Mutra avarana / avarodha – obstruction of urine
  • Nabhi shula – pain in and around the navel
  • Vankshana shula – pain in the groins
  • Parshva shula – pain in the flanks / sides of the abdomen
  • Kukshi shula – pain in the abdomen
  • Medhra shula / pida – pain in the penis

From the modern perspective

This type of pain may be caused due to many factors which include –

  • Urinary calculi
  • Enlargement of prostate gland / BPH
  • Stricture of urethra
  • Inflammation of urinary tract and passages
  • Infection

Treatment shall be in accordance to the cause.

Treatment

Vatahara Chikitsa – Vata balancing measures is implemented on the first hand. Foods and activities which aggravate vata is avoided. Anti-vata therapies like oil and decoction enemas, enemas given through the urinary passages, therapeutic purgation etc will be helpful. Local therapies like herbal oil massage, sudation / fomentation, tub bath or showering with herbal decoctions / oils etc will help in relieving pain and balancing vata.
