Paradi Qualities – Types And Description

10 Paradi qualities

Paraadi Gunas are types of general qualities ( Samanya )which fall under the category of physical qualities – Adhibhoutika qualities.

They are 10 in number

  • Para – important
  • Apara – unimportant
  • Yukti – planning
  • Samkhya – number
  • Samyoga – combination
  • Vibhaga – division
  • Pruthaktva – individuality
  • Parimaana – quantity
  • Samskara – processing
  • Abhyasa – practice

Shloka – Paradi

The knowledge of these 10 qualities is said to be mandatory for obtaining success in clinical practice.

Importance

Importance of Paradi guna in Ayurveda Paradi gunas are of utmost importance for planning and implementing comprehensive treatment in clinical practice.

Para-Apara


These both qualities are contrasting qualities. Para means ‘the best’ whereas apara means ‘un-important’. These two qualities help the physician to distinguish between best and least effective medicines for a given disease.

Thus the physician could administer the best medicines which are highly effective in curing a given disease and reject the less effective ones after having learnt the differences between them in terms of their action and ability to cure a disease with constant practice. The herb / drug / treatment / diet of choice may be selected on basis of knowledge of these qualities.

Yukti

means situational understanding of a given disease and situational decision for implementation of particular medicines in particular conditions. Samkhya

Sankya means number. The knowledge of numbers helps in determining the proportions of doshas involved in manifestation of diseases. It also helps to know the number of herbs put together to make a formulation.

Samyoga

Vibhaga

Vibhaga – means separation. This is opposite quality of samyoga. When the individual ingredients of the combination are separated, the combination doesn’t exist.

Prutaktva

Parimana

Parimaana – means measurement. Manufacture of medicines and determination of dosage of medicines or individual components of formulations depend on the knowledge of quantity and measurement.

Sanskara

Abyasa

Abhyasa – means practice. Following proper dietetic regimen, rejecting the unwholesome and non-conducive foods, taking proper medicines at proper time, all these depend on the knowledge of ‘practicing things’.
