Introduction

  • The book Yogaratna Samucchayam is written in Sujanapriya vyakhyana along with Dharakalpa
  • As per the guidance of Sreeman Krishnan Vaidya who was the disciple of Abhinava Vagbhatta (Mootha koyi thampuran), A S Gopalapilla has written this book.
  • He took the formulations from various old Talagranthas (Palm leaves) and Sanskrit nigantus and compiled this book.
  • Around 500 unique formulations are referred in this book

JWARA CHIKITSA (Treatment of fever)

Chaturdasangam kwatha:

  • Dasamoola

Indication – Vata kapha jvara, Sannipatha jvara

Karavyadi kwatha:

These are taken in equal quantity and cow’s urine is added; decoction is prepared.

Indication – Sannipatha jvara, Srothoshodaka (free radical scavenging)

Shathavaryadi svarasa:

Juice of Shathavari and Guduchi should be taken along with jaggery.

Katukadi kvatha:

Anupana – Honey and Pepper powder

Indication – Kaphaja fever

Angaraga taila:

  • Ingredients – Moorva, laksha, haridradvaya, manjishta, indravaruni, bruhathi, saindava, kushta, Jatamamsi, rasna, satavari.
  • Indication – Sarvajvara- all kind of fever for external application

Sarjadi taila:

  • Sarja is grinded with kanji and made into a paste and oil is prepared with that. It is applied mixing with cold water.

Indication – Burning sensation associated with fever, hot flashes due to Vatarakta (gouty arthritis)

Yavachurnyadi taila:

  • Barley powder (2 pala) and Manjishta churna (1/2 pala) mixed with shataguna kanjika and oil is prepared
  • Indication – Fever

Panchamushtikam kwatha:

Preparation – Each one is taken 1 pala each and made into decoction.

Indicated in – Gaseous tumor, Abdominal pain, Breathlessness, cough, fever.

Atisara chikitsa

  • Hijjala dala svarasa :
  • It is taken along with honey in Amatisara (dysentery)
  • Kalingadi kalkam : Indrayava, vacha, mustha, devadaru, ativisha, are made into paste with tandulodaka – helps to reduce Vata pitta atisara (diarrhoea)
  • Angodamoola kalkam :
  • Ankola moola is made into paste with tandulodaka.

Indicated in Atisara (diarrhoea) and Grahani (mal absorption).

Kalingadi gulika:

  • Kalinga beeja (Indrayava), Bilva phala majja
  • Jambu beeja, Amra beeja majja
  • Rasanjana, Laksha
  • Haridra dwaya, Hreebera
  • Katphala, Shooka nasika
  • Lodra, Mocharasa
  • Dhataki,
  • Vatasrunga
  • Shanka bhasma

Preparation – Powder of these ingredients are grinded with tandulodaka and made into tablet form and dried in shade.
Dose of 10-12 gram.

Indication – fever and diarrhoea, abdominal pain, diarrhoea, blood borne disorders.

Lungs and heart

Pranavaha sroto vikara chikitsa

Vallabha ghrita:

  • Haritaki – 50 in number
  • Sauvarchala lavana – 2 pala

Preparation – These 2 ingredients are taken as Kalka and ghee is prepared

Indication – Heart diseases, breathlessness, abdominal pain, abdominal disorders.

Ajaapanchaka (5 derivatives of goat)

  • Cchaga sakrit rasa
  • Urine
  • Milk
  • Curds
  • Ghee – Equal part.
  • Alkali

Preparation – Ghee is taken in equal to the quantity of all four. Kshara is taken as kalka and Ghee is prepared.

Indication – tuberculosis/emaciation, breathlessness, cough.

Daruparpatadi kvatha:

  • Devadaru, Parpataka
  • Barngee, Mustha
  • Vacha, Dhanyaka

  • Nagara, Bhoonimbha

Anupana Asafoetida, honey

Indication – Hiccup, asthma, cough, throat catch, emaciating disorders, nausea.

Vindyavasa yoga:

  • Vyosha, Shathavari
  • Triphala, Balamoola
  • Atibalamoola,
  • Loha basma – equal part

Indication –Chest injury, throat disorders, emaciating disorders, stiffness of the shoulder, facial paralysis.

Netra roga chikitsa (treatment for eye diseases)

Patradi anjanam:

  • Patra, Gairika
  • Karpoora, Liqorice
  • Neelotpala, Anjana kallu
  • Nagakesara

Indication – Timira (blindness)

Sreevasadi gundanam :

Powder of Sreevasa, Ativisha, Lodra and a pinch of Saindava is applied over a clean cloth. Wipe the eyes externally with the cloth.

Sikhari yogam:
Sikhari moola is grinded. Mixed with Saindava and Dadhi Masthu and kept in bronze vessel. Can be applied in acute eye diseases.

Night blindness
Matsyanda is incised and can be taken along with Bringaraja for 7 days.

Miscellaneous formulations

Mundithikaa churnam:

Powder of Mundithikaa is mixed with honey and ghee.
Anupana – Amrutha Kashaya
Indication – Vataraktha (gout)

Kangunikamoola churnam:
Kangunikamoola is administered mixing it with Mahisha Dadhi and Kodravanna.

Indication – Nadeevrana (sinus)

Gandeeradya taila:

  • Gandeerika, Chithraka
  • Bringaraja, Arka
  • Kushta, Devadaru

Preparation – These are made into kalka and mixed with cow’s urine and oil is prepared.

Indication – Dadru kushta (scabies), Kitibha kushta (psoriasis)

Asthisamhara yoga:

  • Asthisamhara
  • Laksha
  • Gudhuma
  • Arjuna tvak

Preparation – These are dried, powdered and should be taken with milk and ghee

Indication – Sandhimuktha, simple and complex fractures.

Varunadya taila:

  • Tvak
  • Patra Varuna
  • Moola
  • Pushpa
  • Trikantaka

Preparation – Oil is prepared using the decoction of these ingredients.

Indication – Sarkara – Asmari (urinary calculi), Basti soola (cystitis), Moothra krichra (dysuria)

  • Administered as enema

Vanakarpasa poopa:

  • Vana karpasa moola
  • Tandula

Preparation – Both are grinded together and made into papad

Indication – Apachi (cellulitis)

Shakhodakadi taila:

Indication – goitre

  • Taila is used for errhines.

Patalee taila:

Oil is prepared using decoction and Kalka of Patali moola.

Indication – Dagdha vrana (wounds), oozing, burning sensation, blisters.

Upadamsa chikitsa:

Apply paste of Pooga phala or Asvamara.
Daily intake of Yavanna or Koopa jala.

Pada prakshalana kashaya (for wound wash) –
Decoction is prepared out of Jaya, Jathi, Asvamara and Arka .
It is used for Prakshalana in belanitis.

Bhootha droha in baala (idiopathic diseases of children):

  • Horn of ox and Gorochana is made into powder and it is applied as chutty.

Tarkshyashyla choorna

  • Tarkshyashyla choorna with honey for external application.

Indication – Gudakutta (haemorrhoids and prolapsed rectum).

Rudrajada lepam in antra vrudhi

  • Moola of Rudrajada is made into paste and applied.
  • After that Antra vrudhi is tied with Karada vyanga charma (skin of crow)

Aindree moola choornam:

  • Moola of Aindri is powdered and is mixed with Eranda Taila.
  • Anupana – cow’s milk
  • Indication – All types of Vriddhi (hernia)

Merits

  • The author has used simple language and presentation which made easy to understand.
  • Peculiar formulations are cited which can be easily incorporated in clinical practice.
  • Author has mentioned that he had substituted the drugs which are not available in the formulations which he obtained from ancient palm leaves.

Demerits

  • Pathyaapathyas (wholesome diet and practices) are not mentioned for the formulations which is indeed essential for clinical practice to gain maximum benefit out of the formulations.
  • In most of the formulations the dose is not determined.
