Ayurvedic perspective

Clove Essential Oil, Ayurvedic perspective

Clove is called as Lavanga in Ayurveda. We do not have a direct reference of Clove Essential Oil or in fact any essential oil directly in Ayurvedic treatises, though clove oil has been traditionally used for many house-hold and health purposes in India, for ages.

In this article I would make a comparative study between Clove Essential Oil and its chief ingredient i.e. Lavanga and its properties, its doshic and therapeutic actions as explained in Ayurveda.

Clove Essential Oil though is in the form of oil, it will surely carry the properties of Lavanga or Clove in it. Below mentioned are the properties of Lavanga or Clove as mentioned in Ayurvedic treatises –

Rasa (taste) – Tikta (bitter), Katu (pungent)
Guna (qualities) – Laghu (light for digestion), Snigdha (unctuous, oily)
Vipaka (post-digestion conversion) – Katu (pungent)
Doshic Action – Lavanga or Clove is Kapha-Pitta hara (balances or controls Kapha and Pitta)

Mode of action

Mode of action of Clove based on its properties
Lavanga or Clove can be said to predominantly destroy Kapha and Pitta on the basis of its Rasa, Guna, Veerya and Vipaka.

Morbid Kapha creates blocks in the body and channels of the body impairing different functions. On the other hand morbid Pitta inflames and corrodes the tissues and causes inflammation, which is once again the main cause for many diseases occurring in us.

Many diseases and conditions which are successfully addressed and treated by using Clove Essential Oil are either caused by Kapha or Pitta, i.e. most of them are due to blocks and accumulation of wastes in the body or due to inflammation of the system and tissues. Ultimately in both Kapha and Pitta borne diseases are chiefly caused due to metabolic disturbances.

Clove essential oil effectively treats nausea, sinusitis, indigestion, cold, cough, bronchitis, asthma, liver disorders, headache, body pains, muscle and joint pains, anxiety, depression, insomnia, mental fatigue and exhaustion, candida infections, flatulence, PME, high sugar in blood etc. All these conditions are either caused by high pitta or high kapha or joint vitiation of both kapha and pitta.

Immunity and body-mind strength are hampered or lowered due to blocks caused by Kapha and inflammation caused by Pitta and or morbid combination of kapha and pitta causing various damages in the body. Clove essential oil wards of these pathological elements and helps in building up strength and immunity in the body while curing many diseases in the process.

At the same time, clove essential oil helps in clearing the blocks caused by kapha and ama (metabolites or immature essence of digestion formed due to indigestion, which stick to the walls of the channels and blood vessels of the body causing blocks) in the arteries and enables easy circulation of blood and availability of nutrients and oxygen for easy life processes to take place uninterruptedly.

Use of Clove Essential Oil, Ayurvedic Perspective (based on the properties of Lavanga)
Based on the action of the active ingredient of clove essential oil i.e. clove, from an Ayurvedic perspective, Clove Essential Oil is helpful in effectively combating the below mentioned conditions (owing to the properties of Lavanga, i.e. Clove) –

The above mentioned pharmacological actions and clinical (health) benefits of Lavanga (Clove) and the uses of Clove Essential Oil look identical, at least in some areas of utility. This similarity is due to the presence of active principles and healing properties of Lavanga in Lavanga Taila or Clove Essential Oil.  It is clear that the ancient Ayurvedic teachers had a clear and precise knowledge of utility of Lavanga or Clove, especially in relation to its healing properties, but there is no clear mention of clove oil and its utility in Ayurvedic treatises. Thus Clove Essential Oil can be used in most conditions mentioned by Ayurveda as curable by Lavanga according to the above explanation in this article.
