Majuphal (Gall Oak) Remedies: Leucorrhea, Mouth Ulcer, Diarrhea

Introduction

Majuphal / Mayaphala is a gall and it belongs to Cupuliferae family. In Ayurveda it is used in the treatment of hair care, poisoning conditions, dysentery, diarrhoea, haemorrhoids etc.
Its latin name is Quercus infectoria Oliv. / Quercus incana.  

The word phala (fruit) is used in its name but it is not a fruit and it is a misnomer of this drug.In fact,it is the cocoon of an insect made by using the juice of a tree. The insect responsible to make this cocoon is called Sinips galli tinctoria.

It is available in four colors namely-white,black,blue and green.
The galls contain gallotannic acid and tannic acid, where the earlier one is in major amount.
The galls are rich in astringent taste, cold in potency and Kaphapitta pacifier in nature.

Home remedies

Few of its simple remedies and health benefits are explained here below-

Diarrhoea

1. Gall oak powder along with honey for diarrhoea:
The galls are taken and fine powder is made. This is administered in the dose of 1-2 gram along with honey. This pacifies diarrhoea and dysentery.
Note: As it causes it should be used in children with utmost precaution.

Leucorrhoea

2. Fine paste of the Majuphal for leucorrhea:
Galls are rubbed well with plantain tube juice or rice washed water and applied inside the vagina. Procedure can be carried out for 5-7 days. This is useful in white discharge / leucorrhoea.

Haemorrhoids

3. Mayaphala gall and Hareetaki fine paste application in haemorrhoids:
Hareetaki fruit rind and Galls of Majuphal are taken in  equal amount and fine paste is made. This is applied to the anal region in cases like fissure in anus, haemorrhoids etc.

Pharyngitis, laryngitis

4. Hot infusion for pharyngitis and laryngitis:
Galls are made into coarse powder and added to 4 parts of hot water .This kept for a while and filtered. This hot infusion is used for mouth gargling. It has significant benefits in pharyngitis and laryngitis.

Gingivitis, mouth ulcers

5. Mouth rinse or medicinal retention in gingivitis and mouth ulcers:
Tender leaves of Jasmine (Jati – Jasminum officinarum) is made into fine paste or fresh juice is taken. Galls are rubbed well with this juice or paste and a mixture is made.This is used to retain in the buccal cavity or used for rinsing the mouth. It is highly beneficial in repeated complaints like gingivitis, mouth ulcer etc.

The hill side folk healers of Rajasthan, Assam and Meghalaya use Majuphal as an anti poisonous herb. As the drug is a potent constituent having the property of coloring to the hair, it has wide scope for designing a natural hair dye.
