Tendon is a tough rope-like structure (tissue) that connects muscle to the bone. Inflammation of a tendon is called-Tendinitis and it is most commonly from overuse by various functions or due to infection. Even though Tendinitis may occur in any age group, it occurs in the individuals in their middle or old age because it is often the result of overuse over a long period of time during this period;it may be due to lifestyle or due to the concerned profession.
It is wrongly spelled as tendonitis by some.

Commonly affected tendons

The tendons that commonly affected are-
tendons of the hand(base of the thumb)
achilles tendon and the tendon that runs across the top of the foot
tendons of the upper arm that effect the shoulder
patellar tendinitis which affects the patellar tendon (jumper’s knee)
elbow
hip etc

Most common activities that lead to tendinitis are as follows-
Carpentry
Cleaning house
Gardening
Painting
Scrubbing
Playing Tennis, Golf, Throw ball etc
Throwing and pitching activities
Constant writing
Constant typing
Professional players of Carrom etc

Features

Common features of Tendinitis:
Pain at the site of the tendon and surrounding area-It may be gradually extendable or found with insidious onset, severe or excruciating kind.
Irritating inflammation may also found in few of the individuals which may decrease the working capacity of the affected area.
Tenderness, redness and mild elevated heat etc are the added features in most of the cases in its severity.
According to the extent of affliction and the area (deep or superficial) the injury may vary and accordingly its features may be exhibited.

Ayurvedic understanding

Ayurvedic understanding of Tendinitis:
Ayurveda refers Khandara word for Tendons. Acharya Charaka and Acharya Madhava (author of Madhava nidana) made it very clear that excess intake of Vata aggravating food and beverages and the habits/functions which provoke Vata (Vata prakopaka karana) leads to lodgement of Vata (Vyanavata in particular) in relative body parts.Especially if it lodges in Khandara sthana(Khanadarashrita vata) leads painful condition which mimicks with the features referred in Tendinitis in modern medicine.

Line of treatment

Line of Treatment in Khanadarashrita vata (Tendinitis): 
Vata pacifying measures with special reference to the medicaments possessing Vedanasthapana (analgesic) and Shothahara(anti inflammatory) action are found to be treatments of choice. Ushna (warm)-Snigdha (unctuous), Sookshma (minuteness) and Sthira (stable) medicaments are of primary choice.

Single herbs

Rasna-Alpnia galangal or Alpnia calcarata-Rhizome
Bilva (Aegle marmelos)-Root
Bala (Sida cardifolia) -Root – Sida cordifolia or Country mallow is known as Bala in Ayurveda. The word Bala refers to strength. This herb is used to increase strength of body. Bala is an ancient Ayurvedic herb, used widely in a variety of Ayurvedic medicines and oils to improve strength of bones, muscles and joints.
Eranda (Ricinus communis)-Root and Seed oil
Punarnava (Boerrhavia diffusa) – Root or whole plant
Gokshura (Tribulus terrestris) – Whole plant – Tribulus brings down swelling, acts as diuretic and reduces swelling very quickly. It is one among Dashamoola – group of 10 anti inflammatory roots.
Guggulu(Commiphora guggulu) – Resin
Shallaki(Boswellia serrata)-Resin
Jeeraka(Cuminum sativum)-Seeds etc

Home remedies

Home remedies for Tendinitis: 
Equal amount of Eranda taila (castor oil) and Sarshapa taila (mustard oil) are taken and warmed. This is applied to a cloth and wrapped around the lesion.
The fine powder of wheat and Shunthi (ginger) is mixed and by adding little warm water thick paste is made. This is applied around the affected area of Tendinitis. If necessary the area can be wrapped with a cloth.
