Guda Sharkara – Grewia hirsuta Uses, Research, Side Effects

Grewia hirsuta is identified with different names in Ayurveda such as Guda Sharkara, Nagabala and Gangeruki. It is used in treating bleeding disorders, dysuria. It acts as an aphrodisiac and anti aging herb.

Botanical name- Grewia hirsuta Vahl.(Grewia polygama Mast or G. Pilosa Roxb)
Family- Tiliaceae, Malvaceae (parushaka kula)

Medicinal properties

Grewia hirsuta medicinal properties:
Rasa (taste) – Madhura – sweet, Kashaya – astringent
Guna (qualities) – Guru (heaviness), Picchila (slimy), Snigdha – unctuous, oily
Vipaka- Madhura – undergoes sweet taste conversion after digestion
Veerya – Sheeta – Coolant
Effect on Tridosha – Balances Vata and Pitta Dosha
Prabhava – Rasayana – anti aging, causes cell and tissue rejuvenation

Part used– Root, fruit
Dosage- decoction 50-100 ml; powder 3-6 g

Uses

Grewia hirsuta uses:
It is used in treating
Kshaya – tuberculosis, chronic respiratory diseases wasting of muscles
Raktapitta  – bleeding disorders like nasal bleeding, Ulcerative colitis and menorrhagia
Mutrakruchra – dysuria – difficulty in urination
It acts as an aphrodisiac.
It is administered in treating menorrhagia. It is also administered after abortion to check excessive bleeding.
It is a good nerve tonic, useful in neurological disorders
Useful in constipation and gastritis.

Side effects, research

Grewia side effects:
There are no known side effects with this medicine.

Interaction with medicines, supplements

Can this be used while taking Homeopathic medicine?
Yes. This product does not react with homeopathic medicine.

Can this medicine be continued while taking supplements like multivitamin tablets, Omega 3 fatty acids etc?
Yes. Generally, this product goes well with most dietary supplements. However, if you are taking more than one product per day, please consult your doctor for an opinion.

With western medicines
Seek your doctor’s advice if you are taking this product along with other western (allopathic / modern) medicines. Some Ayurvedic herbs can interact with modern medicine.
If both Ayurvedic and allopathic medicines are advised together, then it is best to take Allopathic medicine first, wait for 30 minutes and then take the Ayurvedic medicine.

Reproductive system – Aphrodisiac. Indicated in menorrhagia, threatened abortion, etc.
Excretory system – Indicated in dysuria, UTI. Increases urine output.
Satmikarana – Rejuvenative. indicated in general debility
Tapakrama – Indicated in fever and associated burning sensation.
