Today, a lot of improvements are required in Ayurvedic method of teaching. A teacher comes, teaches for an hour and he leaves, then next teacher enters and gives contrasting ideas. Ayurvedic students are totally left confused.

It may not look very feasible, while the regular one hour classes run, at least one hour per day by one (same) doctor continuously throughout the student’s stay in the college should be provided. That particular teacher should be accepted as Guru for the class. By this, there will be continuity of information and thoughts. The students will also become quite familiar with that teacher and feel free to ask questions and discuss with liberty. The dedicated teacher should have open mind. If he does not know all answers, he can openly say that he will refer the textbooks and revert back.

By this, some elements of Gurukula system can be adopted even today. An able doctor is supposed to enter into the mind of the patient. For this to happen, the Ayurvedic teacher should first, enter into the mind of his students. But unfortunately such a thing is quite rarely happening.

In Indian philosophy, the ultimate teaching is silence.
चित्रं वट-तरोर्मूले वृद्धाः शिष्या गुरुर्युवा,
गुरोस्तु मौनं व्याख्यानं शिष्यास्तु च्छिन्न-संशयाः
Citraṁ vaṭataror mūle vṛddhāḥ śiṣyā gururyuvā, guros tu maunaṁ vyākhyānaṁ śiṣyās tu cchinna-saṁśayāḥ – Shiva Sutra.
This is in reference to a spiritual stage wherein Lord Shiva, in the form of Guru is teaching, by meditating in silence. With his meditation power, all the doubts in the minds of the students is cleared.
That is the ultimate Gurutva. I do not expect that from our teachers, though many of them are silent to the doubts of the students.

The bottom line is, teacher should understand the student. Now, in medical and Ayurvedic colleges, attempt for suicide are more. If there is an understanding teacher, with whom the student can communicate freely such tragedies will not happen. Many a times student might not be associated freely with his parents. In those cases, if teacher is freely accessible to the student, he/she can develop self confidence and feel cared and loved.
