How To Make Ayurvedic Herbal Anti Dandruff Hair Oil At Home?

For dandruff, scalp psoriasis, itching, eczema etc, an anti dandruff hair oil is the best medicine for external application. Here is a very simple hair oil that you can make at home using simple ingredients.

So far we have made two hair oils –
Amla hair oil for good hair growth,
Bhringaraj hair oil
for good hair nourishment, shining and for grey hairs.
Let us make an anti dandruff hair oil which is also good for scalp psoriasis and other scalp skin issues.

Hair oil preparation video

Ingredients

Aloe vera leaf pulp or dry powder – 50 grams
Triphala powder – 50 grams (Triphala is a mix of three fruits – Amla, Terminalia chebula and Terminalia bellirica)
Neem powder – 50 grams
Manjishta – Rubia cordifolia – Indian madder – 50 grams
Yashtimadhu powder – Licorice – 50 grams
Water – 1000 ml (1 liter)
Coconut oil – 500 ml (half liter)

Procedure

Step 1: Make Kashayam –
Take all the herbal powders in a clean wide mouthed vessel. But keep 10 grams of each powder aside from this, which will be used later. So, 40 grams of each of the herbal ingredients, including aloevera is added to 1 liter of water. Heated in mild fire.
While heating, stir the contents continuously.
Boil and reduce the water quantity to 500 ml (half a liter). Filter it to get the water decoction (Kashayam).

Step 2: Making the anti dandruff hair oil –
Take this Kashayam in a wide mouthed, bigger vessel.
Add 500 ml of coconut oil to it.
Mix the 10 grams of each herbs together with a little water. Make a paste and add it to the oil+kashayam mix.
Heat the contents in mild fire.
Stir continuously,
Heat it till all the moisture content is lost and only oil and the herbal paste remains at the end.

Signs to observe:
In the initial phase of heating, the total mass bears curdy and dirty appearance.
Slowly as you move towards the end of heating, the oil starts getting separated from the rest of the ingredients.
In the initial phase of heating, no particular smell or colour can be appreciated in the mix.
Nearing to the end, the vessel yields good smell of oil and ingredients and also exhibits good oil colour.

The end stage is very important to know. At the end stage, there will be thick frothing.
If you take the herbal paste from the oil and put it directly on fire, if there is no sound (of moisture), it indicates that you should stop heating immediately. If there is sound, it indicates that there is still remnant moisture. So, you need to continue heating till there is no sound.

Nearing to the end, if you take out a small part of herb paste from the oil, allow it to cool down a little, then roll between your thumb and index finger, you can easily roll it to the form of a wick. It will be neither too smooth (indicating water content) nor too granular / rough (indicating over-burnt oil).

So, observe these features, stop heating the oil and filter it when it is still hot. You need to filter when it is hot, or else the herbal paste will absorb all the oil, resulting in loss of oil.

Preserve in air a tight container. avoid direct exposure to air / sunlight / moisture.

FAQs

Is it too cold or is it too hot?
It is neither too cold and not too hot. Hence, it usually does not worsen sinusitis (like regular coconut oil does in some people).

Is it a traditional formula?
No. I have derived this based on ancient Ayurvedic text book references and my clinical experience.

What if all the ingredients are not available?
Make the oil with whatever ingredients you can get.

Is making kashayam as first step very necessary? Can’t we make the oil directly by adding herbs+coconut oil and water?
For preparing traditional Ayurvedic oils, making Kashayam as the first step is necessary. It allows the oil to have both water soluble and fat soluble active constituents of herbs.
As a short cut method, you can make the oil directly, without making Kashayam. The results will be somewhat compromised.

Hello Doctor. This is definitely a useful article. I have one query that can we use/apply the kashayam directly to scalp. I mean can we skip the oily part, because when we apply some hair oil, we need to wash it before going out in pollution and at times it not possible, so we have to skip applying the hair oil.

    Thanking You

That’s actually an interesting thought. In stead of kashayam, you can just make a paste of herbs with sufficient quantity of water and apply as hair pack and wash off after 15-30 minutes. If you make kashayam and just apply it to scalp, it might not have desired efficacy.

    Dear Doctor Janardhanji,

Hare Krishna. I hope to get the ingredients to make this. i have had itchy scalp for too long. especially in the damp heat and evenings. It seems to be contagious as my room-mate now also has itchy scalp and it seems to infect wooden hair care articles like combs then reinfect the scalp. i notice i have severe itch reaction to coconut oil and recently discovered i do not have the same reaction to mustard seed oil. One Kalongi oil seems okay too. I found plain vinegar does help with the itching as a rinse for the hair after washing. i suppose Indian ladies know of a good natural method to remove some of the oil from the hair and sheets after massage but i struggle with it. i find the oil to be rather miserable in sheets and towels and to not look too nice on the long hairs. Thank you again. God bless you.

      Dear Maah,
You can try with half a teaspoon of neem oil + kalongi oil or mustard oil.
You can use reeta powder or meera herbal hair wash powder to wash off the oil, while washing your hair.

Hi, when scalp itching and dandruff are not controlled by mere application of hair oil, oral medicines might be required. Better than this, there are many better oral medicines containing neem, turmeric, triphala etc. Please consult your doctor for right oral medicines.

If you make it perfectly, this oil will not be sticky and you can apply a few drops after hair wash.

I took 1 1/2 yr treatment for psoriasis, I was given a oil which is red in colour & asked to apply for 1/2 hr before wash. I get scales in forehead between eyebrows and in alar crease of Left nostril. Also i have greyish-white nodules along the hair shaft in scrotal hairs which is itching. Kindly suggest me to prepare the oil at home and also a remedy through any ayurvedic permanent hair removal powder/oil to eliminate this scrotal fungus hair. Waiting for your reply.

Hello Dr.! Can an Ayurvedic oil be made with whole herbs (not powdered) cut in small pieces? For instance if I use amla, will small pieces of dried amla be mixed properly in the oil?
    Thank you

It can be done. But the Amla pieces should not be very large. You can make small amla pieces and use it to prepare oil.

Hello Doctor. I have seen some make Ayurveda oil by adding the powders to oil and letting it rest for a few days or weeks, without using heat. Could I try this method? I would like to use Brahmi, shikakai and amla for hair growth and healthy scalp and would like to place it in castor oil and coconut oil for a few days until the oil absorbs the benefits of the powders. Will I this method work?

Thank you doctor. I subscribed to your website. Very useful information. One more question, if I prepare hair oil using your method, could I use castor oil instead of coconut oil to cook the oil in? Coconut oil has caused my hair to fall more in the past.

Hello Dr Hebbar, Applying anti-dandruff oil continuously from 10 days and washing with shikakai powder. Noticed scalp gets oily after 2 hours of washing hair. Does it take some days to observe effectiveness or do you recommend internal medicine to cleanse for removal of dandruff. My body type is Kapha. Please let me know.
