Are there any other remedies too for hiccups using herbs that are more commonly available in the house (than katuki)? For example, eating sugar helps if I’m not mistaken.

For daily life harmless small hiccups, there are some remedies like sipping in water slowly, having little sugar, holding breath for a few seconds etc. The above remedy is for uncontrolled hiccup, which appears even after general measures.

Is Katuki also called “Milk Thistle”?

If hiccups are due to eating once a little too quickly, how long might they last?

Are hiccups due to Vata aggravation? If so, can general herbs that reduce Vata excess and help nerves/muscles relax (like Ashwagandha) also help?

    Thank you,

English name of Katuki is Picrorhiza
Milk Thistle weed is Silybum marianum.
Both Milk Thistle and Katuki are used in liver disorders.
Hiccup due to ingestion issues should last for only a few minutes (5 – 10)
Hiccup is a Vata reaction at the level of oesophagus and stomach. So, all Vata mitigating herbs might not help in hiccups.

Also, is it true that diaphragm muscles get tight/stiff in this condition? Does it help to apply any oils on diaphragm area i.e. at bottom of rib cage?

    Thank you,

Hiccup as per modern terms is – synchronous diaphragmatic flutter
As per Ayurveda, it is a case of mis-directed Vata. Applying oil in the diaphragm area should also help.
