An Ayurveda Tip For Better Health – Make Some Money And Be Rich!

This article is not meant to offend anyone. I myself am not a rich guy. I live in a rented home and can’t afford to buy a car, yet. My monthly income is about a fresher engineer’s salary.  But there are many explanations as to why being rich is good for your health. Interestingly both a recent research report and ancient Ayurveda concur on this issue.

money

1. The first section, first chapter, first verse of Ashtanga Hrudayam (An Ayurvedic text book), says,

आयु: कामायमानेन धर्मार्थ सुखसाधनम् । आयुर्वेदोपदेशेषु विधेय: परमादर: ॥
āyu: kāmāyamānena dharmārtha sukhasādhanam | āyurvedopadeśeṣu vidheya: paramādara: ||

To achieve the purpose of life, that is

  • Dharma – following the path of righteousness
  • Artha – earning money in a legal way
  • Kama – fulfilling our desire
  • Moksha – achieving salvation,

having long life is the means.

Ayurveda explains four purposes of life. These are called as purusha arthas. And earning money is the second in the list.

2. Four qualities of a patient:
There are four qualities that are desired in a patient. They are –
Adhya – Being rich.
Bhishagvashya – Willing to listen to the doctor. Obeying the doctor’s advice.
Jnapaka – Having good memory. It helps the patient to explain his symptoms in detail. It also helps him to keep in mind, all the doctors instructions, diet advice etc
Satvavaan – having good tolerance to wide range of medicines and treatments.

3. Poverty and depression:
Being rich does not guarantee you a complete mental health but at least it takes away the mental burden of being poor.

Recent study published in the December edition of European Journal of Public Health has linked low wages with hypertension, especially in women and youngsters.
So clearly, having a low income is a cause of stress and can lead to many diseases.

But from a spiritual perspective, being wealthy is not very advisable. But being rich helps you mentally, physically and socially for sure!

🙂 “artha” is wealth. It may not mean just being rich. Are rich people content with their wealth? Sometimes not…they want more most of the time. Again, are rich people so healthy all the time? A person can save a lot without spending…he is rich- but is he living a better life? No way. So what it can mean is- being content in what we have-be satisfied and learn to live with what we have – which helps our overall health. If we have money-then only we can buy medicines and good food. For money and health- we have to work and earn. But it is for living a good life- not to be rich. You work and earn not to be rich, but to live a better life to buy what you want and help others in need.

I completely agree with you. The purpose of making money is only to make a better living and helping others who are nearby. That is why Dharma (righteousness) is placed before Artha ($$$). 🙂
