How to Improve Brain Speed and Memory Space? 25 Sure Shot Tips

Keep them at a distance who say that your brain and mind has limited powers. Whatever your age, you can surely work to improve your brain speed and memory space. Newspapers often report people in their 80s and 90s graduating from college. If they can, then why can’t you? Here are a few tips.

brain exercise

Use it or lose it- This applies to your brain. It means – the more you memorize, the more you read, the more you try to understand new stuff, the more you think positively, more will be the brain power. On the contrary, less you read, less you think and innovate, less will be your brain speed. So make an effort to read more, learn good and interesting things.

Confidence  and self belief – If I do not believe that I can ride a horse, I surely will not be able to ride a horse. “Its all in the mind” they say. Its true. For you to do anything, you have to believe that you can do it. That is the first and basic prerequisite.

Do not listen to others – If Steve Jobs believed in what others had to say, he could have ended his career as a clerk of a bank. Let me share a quote from “Pursuit of Happiness” –
“Hey. Don’t ever let somebody tell you… You can’t do something. Not even me. All right?
You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.”

Prayer – A positive mindset is really needed to improve brain and mind qualities. There is nothing as good as prayer to inject positivity.  Prayer is just a way of connecting your brain and mind to your soul. Prayer is a way of instilling purity into your heart. Prayer is a way to cleanse your mind off impurities.

Pranayama – We have already dealt in detail about the benefits of Pranayama, how to do pranayama and its side effects and remedies, in case if you’re doing it wrong.

Yoga or any physical activity – A strong body helps to have a strong mind. (and vice versa). Exercise and mental strength are directly related. So, whatever is your age, and body strength, try to have some sort of physical activity. – 10 minutes brisk walk, swimming, skiing, cycling, playing Tennis, Kabbaddi, hide and seek.. whatever you like – at least 10 minutes a day.

Spend time with kids – Develop Childish Innocence – This may not be possible to all. But it is really effective. If you spend an hour with someone, then your mind will have positive or negative impact due to influence of that person. Similarly, if you spend some time with a toddler, watching her play, how she learns new things, etc., chances are that you will acquire more innocence. Steve Jobs famous quote – “Stay hungry, stay foolish” – probably hints towards being innocent and open to learning new things.

Write down and prioritize – You need to feed your brain in some order so that it can process the incoming information systematically. Writing down lists helps to think clearly. It gives you an extra advantage of analyzing things differently. When you write and see your notes, another set of information is fed to the brain, about your topic. Hence, it improves your thinking power over the topic.

Memory games – The more your brain is trained to memorize, more will be its memory.

Chess, Su Do Ku – and such other games help to improve analytical capacity of brain.

Ayurvedic supplement – Ayurvedic herbs like Brahmi, Ashwagandha, Shankhapuspi, Jyotishmati, Aparajita etc are very useful in improving memory and concentration. Consult your Ayurvedic doctor for a right medicine for you. (If in case, he thinks that you really need one)

Ghee – Regular use of clarified butter helps to improve intelligence and memory power.

Cow ghee is very well suited for those  seeking improvement in intelligence and memory.

Sit with a straight back – As per the terms of Yoga and Ayurveda, sitting straight helps for easy flow of Prana through the six chakras present in the spinal column. Tips to sit straight

Cold water bath – Cold water bath improves the level of alertness and helps to understand and interpret things faster. But cold water bath is not recommended for all. Cold or hot water for bath?

Eye exercises – Rotatory eye movements, or playing with a ball and watching it continuously improves sharpness of the brain.

Be fast in whatever you do – Faster body activities help you accelerate the learning process. So, whatever the work that you do, using a typewriter, chasing a robber, etc. Try to do it fast. It saves a lot of time and it trains your brain and body to be faster.
However, this does not apply to eating, though.

Good sound sleep – Sound sleep for 6 -7 hours is really helpful in improving memory. It helps to keep the brain calm and concentrated. Tips for sound sleep

Multitask with great care – I already have dealt in detail about multitasking. It is good, saves a lot of time, but only when it is done the right way.

Watch what you eat -Too much of potato, garlic, onion, oily food and non veg do not contribute to your memory and concentration. (though they may be good for your physical health. “Too much” is the keyword).

Do not test and tease your brain – While you’re trying to improve memory, do not test yourself to know how much you’ve improved. It is a long process  and you will surely win. Have self belief.

Keep away distractions – As far as possible, limit the use of Facebook, twitter, limit those non sense TV serials that you watch and indulge in something creative and positive. Write a poem, draw a picture, help your son solve his maths problem, instead.

Perfect physical health – Swami Vivekananda says – Good physical health is quite necessary for Spiritual journey. The same applies to memory and concentration as well. Try to be proactive. Use Ayurvedic remedies and stay healthy.

Happy mood – A happy mind is an active mind. In your free time, read some jokes, crack some jokes and try to spread laughter. It is rewarding.

Good stomach health – You really can not concentrate on anything when you’re suffering from bloating or gastritis. Soon after a full meal, you’d rather sleep than study a neuroscience fiction novel. Keep your stomach light.

Brahmacharya – I kept it for the last but abstinence is the most powerful tool ever to improve brain power and concentration. Purity of your mind and heart gives rise to unbelievable brain powers.

Brahmi for brain speed

Which is the best liquid to consume with Brahmi for brain power?
Dr JV Hebbar
Brahmi is available in the form of tablet, capsule or powder in the market. If your Ayurvedic doctor has advised Brahmi to you, then below are a few liquids that go well with it.
The type of liquid depends on the purpose for which Brahmi is advised.
Read related: Brahmi (Bacopa Monnieri) Benefits, Dose, Side Effects, Research

Sleep problems, memory and concentration – The main purpose for which Brahmi is used is, to improve focus, memory and concentration. The problems with focus and concentration are often caused by increase of Vata and Pitta Doshas and lack of Kapha dosha. Here, you need a stabilizing, calming, brain soothing liquid to go with Brahmi. Ideally this liquid should be having memory and concentration improving effects and also it should balance Vata and Pitta doshas. Ghee is such a liquid.
Adult dose for this purpose is – 1 tablet / capsule or 2 grams of Brahmi with a teaspoon of ghee, mixed and taken with a cup of lukewarm water, usually at night, 15 minutes before food, usually advised till 1 month.
Warm milk is an alternative to ghee.

Intelligence, mental sharpness, mental alertness, laziness, procrastination – These are the circumstances in which you want to have stimulating effect, as opposed to calming effect explained earlier. Here, you need something which decreases Kapha and stimulates some amount of Vata and Pitta. If this is the purpose, then Brahmi is often advised along with a teaspoon of honey or along with 1 – 2 teaspoons of Saraswatarishta liquid. Saraswatarishta is a brain stimulating Ayurvedic tonic.

Sometimes, brain fog, sluggishness in mood, thoughts etc. can also be caused due to very weak digestion strength. If this is the case, then Brahmi can be advised along with spice mixes like Trikatu, a combination of black pepper, ginger and long pepper fruit.
Read: Ways To Improve Knowledge, Intelligence As Per Sushruta

For example, 2 grams of brahmi mixed with 1 gram of Trikatu, mixed with a teaspoon of honey, paste is made and swallowed with a cup of cold water. But care should be taken as people with sensitive stomachs may not tolerate Trikatu well. If that is the case, then cumin can be a substitute for that.

For speech improvement – Usually brahmi is not advised alone for this purpose. It is often advised along with Saraswata ghrita. Saraswata ghrita contains Vacha as the main ingredient, which is very beneficial in correcting or stimulating speech centers of the brain Another opinion about the above question is, rather than using Brahmi alone, it is always best to use a poly-herbal Ayurvedic medicine, based on the specific disease or purpose.

Great article as always, thank you Dr. Hebbar! This article surely offers more than others on this topic.

There are some nutritional notes that may be added:

    – Iodine is vital for intelligence (the term cretinism is actually a med. term defining iodine deficiency). It is essential for everybody, especially for expecting mothers to eat iodine-rich foods.
Think of Japanese food – sea vegetables provide iodine and fish provides selenium, which is essential for iodine absorption. Milk and egg yolks also provide small amounts iodine.
The problem with iodine deficiency is rampant in places where people live “westernized” life style – fluoride in water, and toothpaste, bromine in bread and chlorine in cleaning products basically make people stupid. Halogens, like Cl, Br and F take place of iodine and disrupt normal intelligence and a whole lot of other functions.Supplementing with iodine, or eating lots of sea vegetables can reverse the process and help detoxify poisonous halogens.

    – Fish oil is a pretty good aid in improving intelligence, especially from cold water fish, like cod or salmon, for example.

    – Healthy gut provides support for healthy brain. Damaged gut microflora (as a result of antibiotics, stress, eating processed food, or environmental toxins) results in that it produces less amount of B vitamins and enzymes. B vitamins are pretty important for keeping our brains bright.

    Thank you. God Bless!
